Recent mountain lion sightings on farmland and trails in the Capay Valley has prompted Yolo County and the Yolo County General Services Departmentโs Parks Division to issue important safety guidelines. Typically, solitary, and elusive, mountain lions are most active at dawn and dusk, times that often coincide with deer activity. Although sightings are rare, they do occur, and these animals can be unpredictable.
"Your safety is our utmost priority," said Yolo County District 5 Supervisor Angel Barajas. "By staying informed and following these guidelines, we can coexist safely with the wildlife in the beautiful Capay Valley."
Please follow these essential safety tips to ensure your safety and stay informed:
Stay alert to your surroundings, especially during dawn, dusk, and nighttime.
Do not hike, jog, or walk alone. Traveling in groups is safer.
Make yourself visible by wearing bright, contrasting clothing.
Check with park or trail personnel about recent wildlife sightings.
Pay attention to trail postings and signs.
Refrain from jogging or mountain biking at dawn or dusk.
Stick to designated trails and check maps frequently to avoid getting lost.
Keep children within arm's reach at all times.
Keep pets on a leash and do not leave them outside at night.
Maintain a safe distance from all wild animals.
Allow animals time and space to move away from you.
Avoid bending over or crouching down to prevent looking like prey.
What to Do If You Encounter a Mountain Lion:
Do not run. Stand your ground and make yourself appear larger by raising your arms and opening your jacket.
Face the lion and make eye contact.
Pick up small children without bending over or turning your back.
Stand upright and avoid squatting or bending over.
Speak firmly in a loud voice and throw objects without turning away.
๐
๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐๐๐๐ค ๐ข๐ ๐๐ญ๐ญ๐๐๐ค๐๐: Use anything availableโsticks, rocks, or your bare handsโto defend yourself and remain standing.
Remember, mountain lions are vital to our ecosystem, but itโs important to keep a safe distance and respect their space.
