Woodland Opera House

Woodland Opera House Live Theatre in a Historic Landmark Building. Wonderful productions and concerts are staged here. to 1:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. & Sunday from 12:00 p.m.
(126)

The box office is now open Tuesday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., as well as on weekend show days - Saturday from 5:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can also email us at [email protected] or leave a phone message at (530) 666-9617 for response. The Historic Woodland Opera House is a true California treasure. Located in the heart of Woodland, California, just 20 miles north

of the state capitol in Sacramento, it provides a variety of entertainment for the whole region. Musicals, dramatic plays, and concerts appear on our stage regularly. We also have a small museum with local artifacts, and we offer free tours by appointment. Our Education Program, located just a few blocks away at the Theatre And Dance Annex, also known as TADA, offers dance and acting classes for youth and adults weekly. And, our Student Outreach Program provides minimal cost theatre experiences to approximately 2,500 school children annually. The Opera House became a part of the California State Parks system in 1976; however it receives no financial support from the State, Yolo County, nor the City of Woodland. We are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, deemed a California Historical Landmark, and we are one of only four fully functioning 19th century Opera Houses in the State.

Get swept away by storytelling and adventure this evening with Peter and the Starcatcher! Considered a “prequel” to the story of Peter Pan, the play highlights the early years, before Peter was named and was known only as “Boy.” This high energy production will keep you enthralled as you’re introduced to swashbuckling (and sometimes bumbling) pirates…and even mermaids!

Performances running through June 30 on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Tickets available at https://bit.ly/3Ry3gU0, the Box Office by calling (530) 666-9617, and 2 hours before each show at 340 Second Street.

Peter and the Starcatcher Spotlight - Let’s interview the Director, Bob Cooner!

What drew you to this particular show?
A couple of things interested me about Peter and the Starcatcher. One was my love for the Peter Pan story and particularly the 1954 Broadway musical Peter Pan that originally starred Mary Martin and was later telecast in the mid-1950s and early 1960s. Secondly, I had seen a couple of productions of Peter and the Starcatcher, and I was interested in the directorial challenges the show presented with its mixture of styles and moods.

What is your interpretation of the central themes of the show?
As an actor, I learned to identify my character's spine: What is the most integral desire of the character? As a director, I think it's important to identify the spine of the show. What is want or need that drives ALL the characters in the piece? In Peter and the Starcatcher, I think the characters are all looking for the one thing out there in the world that will complete them, that will make them whole, that will give their lives meaning. If you listen closely to the play, you'll hear a few of the characters actually say what it is they want.

What research or preparatory work do you undertake before starting rehearsals?
I read a lot and research the history of the play itself. In this case, one of the things I read was J.M. Barrie's 1911 novelization of his 1904 play Peter Pan. So many of the ideas, themes, and even characters in Peter and the Starcatcher have their genesis with Barrie. Also, I read the 2004 novel on which the play is actually based, Peter and the Starcatchers (yes, the title of the novel is pluralized, unlike the title of the play) by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. As in all adaptations, the play does not adhere strictly to the events and characters of the novel. To me, though, the play crystalizes those events and characters, making them sharper and more intensely immediate and dramatic.

What is the thing that excites you the most about this show?
The thing that excites me most about this show is the work of the ensemble. In this play, each actor plays multiple roles—even the actors who play the leading roles very often become secondary characters when needed. It's exciting to see the actors jump wholeheartedly into whatever role each scene requires of them. I don't envy them—it's a lot to juggle. Fortunately, I've got a cast of expert jugglers!

Two weekends of performances remain, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. through June 30. Tickets can be purchased at https://bit.ly/3Ry3gU0

Live Theatre in a Landmark Building

The Historic Woodland Opera House is a true California treasure. Located in the heart of Woodland, California, just 20 miles north of the state capitol in Sacramento, it provides a variety of entertainment for the region. Musicals, dramatic plays, and concerts appear on our stage regularly. We also have a small museum with local artifacts, and we offer free tours every Tuesday from 2-4pm. Our Education Program located just a few blocks away, offers dance and acting classes for youth and adults weekly. And, our Student Outreach Program provides minimal cost theatre experiences to approximately 2,500 school children annually.

The Opera House became a part of the California State Parks system in 1976, however it receives no financial support from the State, the county, or the city of Woodland. We are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, deemed a California Historical Landmark, and we are one of only four fully functioning 19th century Opera Houses in the State.
