In this month’s Riley Report, we are celebrating an incredible school year! 🎓 Last Friday, our seniors crossed the stage into their next adventure, and our kindergartners received a warm welcome as they prepare to rise to first grade. We couldn't be more proud of each and every one of them and were honored to witness this special, full-circle moment.

This year, Woodland knocked it out of the park: two teams earned the highest academic standard in the state, three elementary schools were recognized for academic excellence in student growth and achievement, and so much more. It has truly been a year of educational excellence, and that's a reflection of our incredible staff, principals, and students. Congratulations, Woodland community!

You Spoke. We Heard. 🫶✨

A huge THANK YOU to the 463 Woodland parents and guardians who completed our first-ever Parent Partnership Survey! Your honest feedback gives us a clear baseline as we work together to build a stronger circle of support around every single student.

We are thrilled to see such high levels of trust and satisfaction across our district:
🔹 89.6% feel comfortable reaching out to teachers/staff.
🔹 86.7% feel confident their children are safe and cared for at school.
🔹 86.2% say staff work deliberately to build positive relationships.
🔹 84%+ feel they know how to support their child’s learning at home.

What we're working on next:
You gave us great notes on where we can improve—including streamlining communication to prevent info overload, making digital curriculums easier for parents to access, and simplifying the volunteer process.

Our Commitment to Action:
1️⃣ This survey is now an annual tradition to keep us accountable.
2️⃣ Every school building will set specific communication and parent alignment goals next year.
3️⃣ Principals are already building action plans to tackle your digital curriculum and volunteering feedback.

Thank you for sharing your voice! Together, we ensure every child in Woodland is ready to thrive. 🌲❤️

Woodland Makes History! 🥇📜

We are incredibly proud to share that at the May 28 school board meeting, Woodland School District was officially recognized for launching the very first Civic Seal program in the state of Washington!

Bill Basl from the Civic Learning Council joined us to present a plaque to Superintendent Asha Riley and the school board, thanking them for their leadership in civic education.

But as Mr. Basl noted, the real work happens in the classroom. A massive shoutout and congratulations to the four phenomenal teachers in the Woodland High School Social Studies Department who brought this program to life:

⭐ Shari Conditt
⭐ Kyla Keefer
⭐ Julia Stepper
⭐ Katie Klause

Because of their dedication, five Woodland High School seniors successfully completed the rigorous requirements to earn the historic Civic Seal in its very first year! These amazing graduates will receive a special medal and have this incredible achievement permanently marked on their diplomas. 🎓🎖️

Thank you to our board, our incredible educators, and our hard-working students for leading the way for the entire state!

Civil Dialogue in Action: WHS Power Hour Tackles School Safety & Funding 🤝✨

In an era often defined by polarization, Woodland High School AP Government students proved that communities can still come together to discuss complex issues with empathy and respect.

The student-led Civic Power Hour brought together local leaders—including School Board President Tom Guthrie, Chief of Police Robert Gibbs, Councilwoman Brittny Michaelson, and Superintendent Asha Riley—to discuss the vital role and future funding of our School Resource Officer (SRO).

Key Takeaways:

More Than Enforcement: Panelists emphasized that the SRO role is rooted in prevention, mentorship, and building trust with students before incidents happen.

The Funding Puzzle: Leaders discussed transitioning to a shared-cost model. A proposed idea includes the district covering school-related overtime costs (estimated under $20k), keeping the program sustainable.

Real Impact: A graduating senior shared that campus safety has transformed "night and day" this year, crediting the SRO’s preventative work and positive presence.

Huge thank you to the student organizers, panelists, and community members who showed up to bridge the gap between policy and real-world impact! 🎒🚓

🏆 A TRIFECTA OF EXCELLENCE! 🏆
In an incredible sweep for our district, the Washington State Board of Education (SBE) has officially recognized ALL THREE of our elementary schools for exceptional student performance during the 2024-2025 school year! 🎉
Columbia Elementary, North Fork Elementary, and Yale Elementary have each been named honorees in the Washington School Recognition Program. This prestigious honor is awarded to only 16% of schools statewide, making Woodland’s "three-for-three" achievement a truly rare and significant milestone.
Closing the Gap: Targeted Success
The program identifies schools making massive strides in closing opportunity gaps and ensuring growth for specific student populations. Each of our schools excelled in vital areas:
🔹 Columbia Elementary: Honored for Growth for Students Receiving Special Education Services, highlighting their dedication to inclusive, effective support systems where every learner thrives.
🔹 North Fork Elementary: Earned its award for Growth for Low-Income Students, proving that economic status does not define a student’s potential when given equitable access to high-quality instruction.
🔹 Yale Elementary: Recognized for Growth for Students in One or More Racial or Ethnic Groups, reflecting a deep commitment to cultural responsiveness and high achievement for all backgrounds.
A Community Win
“This is a direct reflection of the incredible work our principals, educators, support staff, and students put in every single day,” said Superintendent Asha Riley. “We are committed to Excellence for Every Child. To have every one of our elementary schools recognized shows that our district-wide focus on excellence and individual student growth is working.”
To celebrate, each school will receive a commemorative banner to display proudly on campus!
Parents and community members can visit the State Board of Education’s searchable database, which went live on May 4.
Congratulations to the staff, students, and families of Columbia, North Fork, and Yale. Your hard work has put Woodland on the map as a leader in educational growth and equity in Washington! ✨

Woodland to Host Civic Power Hour on May 28, 2026

Woodland, WA - May 15: The AP American Government class at Woodland High School invites residents to join an engaging Civic Power Hour on Thursday, May 28th, 2026, from 5 PM to 6 PM at the Woodland High School Commons. This interactive community event aims to empower citizens with knowledge and tools to actively participate in local government and decision-making processes. There will be a panel discussion consisting of experts who have accurate knowledge of the issues our town faces today.

The Civic Power Hour will focus on key local issues, including SRO’s (School Resource Officers) and safety funding.

The event will feature a panel of community experts moderated by Woodland High School students. This panel discussion will be followed by an open Q&A session to address attendees' questions and ideas.

Shari Conditt, the Woodland High School AP Government Teacher, shares that “Civic Power Hour allows our community to not only learn about the School Resource Officer and Safety Funding that Woodland is facing, but it also helps us see that diverse perspectives and opinions can be shared using a civil dialogue framework.”

This event is free and open to all Woodland residents. For more information, please contact Shari Conditt at [email protected] or 360-841-2800.

Our Woodland kids are awesome. Last week, Colin Obot, our WHS Head Track & Field Coach, received this message from a grateful parent:

“My daughter goes to Woodland Middle School and participates in track. Monday, at the first home meet, your track athletes helping were wonderful. In particular, the kids at the shot put pit were so kind and helpful to all the athletes participating. They were giving advice, cheering them on, etc. Even my daughter mentioned how awesome they were. As a high school teacher myself, I know that not all high schoolers are like this, and it's something I notice when I see such wonderful kids. These students really deserve a shout out for being so amazing!!!”

Notes like this remind us of why we're so proud to be Woodland Public Schools. Thank you to this parent for the kind words, and to our students for showing up with such great character! 💚
