We have been alerted by the Office of Public and Indian Housing that there is a nationwide scam regarding Section 8 waitlists. The scammers are trying to obtain personal information to commit fraud.
We are not aware of any of this occurring in Yolo County, but want to help spread the word.
If you have questions about Yolo County Housing programs, including the Housing Choice Voucher program (i.e Section 8 program), you can contact [email protected] or call us at (530) 662-5428. Below are some helpful tips from HUD.
- If it seems too good to be true, it probably is,
- Never click on a hyperlink if you are unsure if it is legitimate or without verifying with a trusted source, and
- Never submit Social Security Numbers, bank / cred card information, or other personal details to a website found through an online search.
Prior to coming to Yolo County Housing, Executive Director Ian Evans worked at Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency for about 8 years, so in total, has been working in Yolo County for approximately 10 years. One of the first things he learned when he started working in Yolo County was that many folks referred to something called "The Yolo Way," and while it may mean something slightly different to each person, for Director Evans, it has always meant that in Yolo County we find a way to get the important things accomplished and we accomplish them through partnerships. This project is a perfect example of the Yolo Way because it would not have been possible without support from Lucas Frerichs for Yolo County Supervisor, District 2, Winters Joint Unified School District, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company.
The El Rio Villas community has approximately 100 children ages 12 and under and had been without a playground for more than 5 years. All the partners understood and recognized how important playgrounds are for the well-being of the community and with the completion of this new playground, we got something very important accomplished, and we did it through partnerships!
Today, we got a chance to show that a home is more than just a house, it is creating a community. Albert Vallecillo, Winters City Council

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has notified Yolo County of a potential Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) due to adverse weather conditions, such as high winds, which could cause tree branches or debris to contact energized power lines, potentially leading to wildfires. This PSPS event will affect parts of Yolo County starting Tuesday, July 2 at 4:00 a.m., with power restoration planned for Wednesday, July 3 by 4:00 p.m.
For more information, visit pge.com/psps and find PSPS maps at www.YoloCounty.org/PSPS . The map indicates city boundaries with blue dots, areas of potential PSPS impact in small pink shapes outside of Capay Valley, and green shapes in Winters. Approximately 200 residents may be affected.

The City of Winters, CA is one week away from the July 3rd Independence Day celebration.
Our partners at the Winters Fire Department would like to remind everyone, safe and sane fireworks (like the ones sold at the non profit organization sponsored booths in town) are the only type of fireworks permitted in Winters. If the Fire Marshal Safe and Sane logo is not displayed, the firework is not allowed without a special pyrotechnic license and permits.
The Winters City Council adopted Ordinance 2022-04 which added Sections 8.24.130-8.24.150 to Chapter 8.24 of Title 8 of the Winters Municipal Code relating to Social Host liability and administrative citations for the use of illegal fireworks. The Firework Social Host Ordinance includes up to a $1000 fine for the discharge of illegal fireworks.
Additionally Winters Municipal Code section 8.24.010 covers the sale and discharge allowed for fireworks in Winters and states:
Subject to the provisions of the State Fireworks Law (Health and Safety Code Sections 12500—12801) and the provisions of this chapter, “safe and sane fireworks,” as defined in Health and Safety Code 12529, may be sold and discharged within the city during the period beginning at twelve noon on the twenty-eighth day of June and ending at twelve noon on the sixth day of July each year.
Illegal fireworks can be reported to our 24 hour non emergency dispatch number at 530-795-4561. Please be as descriptive as possible to assist our police and fire staff to respond to the correct location.

This year, our fireworks campaign slogan is "Keep it Safe, Keep it Legal." It's crucial to remember that in Woodland, fireworks are only legal from June 28 to July 5 and must be "Safe and Sane" varieties.
Using illegal fireworks not only poses a serious safety risk but also comes with a hefty fine of $1,000 per device. Let's celebrate responsibly and protect our community.
Stay informed and stay safe!

Starting June 5th, they will be expanding to several Yolo County locations, including Fridays from 2-4PM at the Taller Arte del Nuevo Amanecer (TANA) building on our Yolano-Donnelly campus at 1224 Lemen Avenue in Woodland.
The MFM program helps reduce both financial and physical barriers to food access. To better serve low-income customers, the MFM accepts SNAP benefits and provides a double-up bucks program through Market Match so that anyone who qualifies can get $20 in produce for just $10.

We’re excited to share that Yolo County Housing has partnered with the Solano County Water Agency on a Riparian Habitat Restoration project at El Rio Villas just outside of Winters to improve the land and create a wonderful outdoor space for our residents. The project’s initial phase includes removing invasive trees like tree-of-heaven and eucalyptus, and mowing invasive weeds like milk thistle, then laying wood chips down to prevent re-growth. The agencies will remove invasive arundo and blackberry grows in the next phase and hope to secure grant funding for the final phase. The final phase will include planting hedgerows along the upper banks of Putah Creek, mowing a loop trail along the creek on Yolo County Housing property, covering it with wood chips to provide a walkable surface, and planting oaks trees for shade. Included here are some photos of the progress being made on phase one. Check back periodically for updates!
