MBLWHOI Library

MBLWHOI Library www.mblwhoilibrary.org The Library was founded by the MBL in 1888, and in 1930 WHOI was founded by the MBL, and thus began this joint library collaboration.

Since 1930 the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) have maintained a vital partnership in the day-to-day operation of the MBLWHOI Library. Today, additionally the researchers at the SEA SEA Education Association, the Woodwell Climate Research Center, and USGS Woods Hole Marine Science Center are also served by the MBLWHOI Library.

A very Woods Hole tree 🎄🦞
Warm wishes for a happy holiday season to all those who celebrate. May it be filled with light, rest, and good company.

This is the most festive fish we could find to wish you a very merry from all of us at the Biodiversity Heritage Library 🐟✨

This striking parrotfish — known locally as the Lena-Girawah — was described in 1834 as “the most splendid of the class of fishes denominated Parrot,” with a vivid green body and three bright red stripes.

As we look ahead to 2026, we wish our global community a year full of open knowledge, collaboration, and continued access to the world’s biodiversity literature.

The Marine Biological Laboratory campus has been added as the first off-Island stop on the Martha’s Vineyard African American Heritage Trail. The new stop at the MBL honors James G. Townsel, a pioneering Black neuroscientist and educator who was involved with the MBL for more than 50 years. The design and wording of the plaque recognizing Townsel were created by students and educators of the STEP Forward Program at the Lawrence Junior High School, Falmouth Public Schools, in Falmouth, Massachusetts in a collaboration with the MV African American Heritage Trail and the MBL. http://bit.ly/43HH67M
