Today, as we enjoy time with family and friends, let us never forget the true meaning of Memorial Day.

This day is not just the start of summer — it is a day of remembrance for the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our freedom and this great nation. Because of their sacrifice, we are able to live the lives we do today.

I ask everyone to take a moment to reflect, pray for the families of the fallen, and remember those who never made it home. Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

From my family and the entire Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, thank you to all who have paid the ultimate price for our country. May God bless our fallen heroes, their families, and the United States of America. 🇺🇸

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple calls concerning diesel fuel being spilled on the roadway beginning at State Route 255 near John Lengacher Road and ending in the area of the New Martinsville Bridge.

Recent Traffic Stops Yield Drug Arrests in Monroe County

On May 16, 2026, Lt. Yonley conducted a traffic stop along State Route 7 for a speeding violation. During the course of the traffic stop, Lt. Yonley identified the driver of the vehicle as Hunter W. Kelly, age 19, of Parkersburg, West Virginia. While speaking with Kelley, criminal indicators were observed leading to a consent search being conducted. During the search Kelley was found to be in possession of a white powdered substance consistent with co***ne. As a result, Kelley was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Jail.

On May 18, 2026, Deputy Cline with the Monroe County Criminal Interdiction Unit conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation along State Route 78 in Summit Township. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Steven E. Winland, age 61, of Woodsfield. During the course of the traffic stop K9 Jade was deployed and alerted to the presence of narcotic odor emitting from the vehicle. A search was conducted leading to Winland being illegally in possession of multiple scheduled prescription pills. As a result, Winland was arrested and transported to the Monroe County Jail.

On May 14, 2026, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an assault in progress at 211 Oaklawn Avenue, Woodsfield.

Upon arrival Deputies made contact with the involved parties, which included Garrett W. Foreman, age 27, of Woodsfield and Robert A. Zemojtel, age 41, of Woodsfield.

An investigation into the incident showed that Foreman and Zemojtel had gotten into a physical altercation with one another as a result of an ongoing dispute between the two. During the course of the altercation, Zemojtel retrieved a hatchet and subsequently began striking Foreman.

Due to the injuries sustained throughout this incident, both subjects were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

Upon release both subjects were transported to the Monroe County Jail where they are currently being housed on charges of Assault and Felonious Assault.

I want to recognize all the men and women who wear the badge and serve their communities every day. Law enforcement officers are asked to see and handle things no human being ever should, yet they continue to answer the call for the good of others.

The stress, sacrifice, and weight of this job are often unseen by the public, but the commitment to protecting others never stops.

While I appreciate all law enforcement, the Deputies of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office obviously hold a special place in my heart. I am proud to serve beside them and thankful for the work they do every single day.
