NorthStar Tutoring Tutoring Pre-K to Grade 5 - In your home or at the library. I can work with your child's homework or use my own educational tools. [email protected]

I am a State of Illinois Certified Type 04 Teacher whose expertise is in Early Childhood with a great deal of experience with educational, emotional and/or physical delays. I have found many different ways to work with children to help them find the best way they can learn and reach their full potential. I am currently in my third year working 15 hours/week as a homebound special ed tutor through

Woodstock School District 200. I have been working as a Substitute Teacher for Woodstock School District since 2004 in which time I did long term positions, one being a pre-K classroom for 5 months. As a sub I have been pleased by the number of requests I have gotten from teachers, especially in the grade school and special ed departments. I worked 5 years for a Hospital's Developmental Institute in their Saturday Diversion Program and Summer Day Camp for one year and 4 years in the 0-3 Early Intervention Program. As a teacher/therapist, I learned how to integrate psychology, occupational, physical and speech therapy as well as deal with the environmental risks of urban poverty. I raised 3 children who are now all in college, so I also know what it is like to be the parent working with the schools. During that time I was very involved in both Boy/Girl Scouts with my son earning his Eagle Scout and my daughter her Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.

Do you have a study buddy? I once had a student with anxiety who was easily overwhelmed. I often worked with this student holding one of my cats or resting their feet on my gentle giant.
Pet Facilitated Tutoring, I call it.
The results were great and other students love the option of having a pet in the room, too. It is hard not to be relaxed and happy while petting an animal.
(Needless to say that a no pet option is of course available)

I hung it myself! This time of quarantine has us learning new skills and being creative in problem solving.
If E-learning has you down, call me! I've been teaching a homebound student for 11 years and so have a lot of experience with distance learning.

Great tutoring lesson today! We had a Benjamin Franklin scavenger hunt. I took two middle school students around town to places such as The Woodstock Independent, library, firehouse, Wolf Optometrist and many more places. The students ask how it relates to BF and read portions of his biography. By the end of two hours, we had only just gotten to the Revolutionary War and they were already impressed! As we drove we also analyzed many of his famous quotes such as, "Keep your eyes wide open before marriage and half shut afterwards." (They surprised me by figuring out the first half but needed to relate marriage to getting a new puppy before understanding the second part.) Hurray for Experiencial Learning! Next week, chickens, eggs and the science behind baking a pavlova!

Schools almost out! Is there one subject that your child just never got a handle on? Summer's a great time to review and nail that skill. I'm not teaching summer school this year so am very flexible for tutoring. Doesn't have to be steady commitment. Contact me and we can discuss options. Your child can start off next year top of the class!

My student's letter to nominate me for Teacher of the Month (I've taken her name out)...

Teacher's First & Last Name: Carol Nurse

School Name: Westwood School District

School Town: Woodstock
Why is this person a candidate for Teacher of the Month? :

I am a special needs girl that is unable to attend public school when the flu season is in effect. My nurse is helping me to write this because I have difficulty communicating my needs and ideas. Miss Carol has come to my home to teach me for the past 8 years. She is patient and looks for many approaches to help me to learn not only school work, but about life outside of my home. It is because of her that I was able to start to attend Woodstock North for half a day in the fall until there was a risk of my getting ill again.

When she first started I was not even able to understand the difference between yes and no. Now I can do multiplication and division and even though I don't like it she helps me to understand what I read and helps me to be able to put my few words/ideas into sentences.

I've been nominated!

Ordinary life is full of lessons, so use the massive snow fall as a way to explain the mysteries of land forms in our world. :)

As a kid I hated to write except when my teacher once had us write a story using all our senses. I wrote about a train and actually had fun. Now as a tutor, I find kids' imagination flies if I do the "writing" and they just come up with things that they hear or see or touch... I add phrases to keep it going and ask a lot of questions. I often offer ideas up for a new direction the story can go in which then sparks their own ideas. Here is the latest Christmas edition:
Santa was putting down the presents under the Christmas tree when he jumped because there was a tiny scratchy sound coming from one of the boxes. Suddenly, the box moved! Santa realized the tin soldier inside was wound up and moving.
Just then the smell from the oven of chocolate chip cookies made Santa stop his work. He ran to the kitchen and stood by the island. Someone was standing there! Mom was baking cookies late at night. She was pouring steaming hot chocolate milk into a brand new big black glass cup.
Santa asked if he could have a silky, milky chocolate chip cookie. Mom was very surprised because she had never seen Santa before in her whole ever life! She accidentally spilled the cocoa on Santa’s suit. He didn’t get mad but still asked for cookies and hot cocoa. Santa felt the warm cup through his white gloves. His fingers were red with chill from outside. Santa tasted the warm cookies and said, “Yum! This is the best cookie in the whole wide world and I’ve been all around the world!”
“Why thank you for saying that. You made my day!” said Mom smiling. “I waited until now so that my kids would not eat the milky silky chocolate chip cookies for you.”
Mom heard stomping hooves of reindeer on the rooftop. She said, “Hey Santa, I have carrots in the refrigerator that are really cold.”
