Salem County Remembers 9-11 Committee

Salem County Remembers 9-11 Committee This volunteer committee has been active since 2002 organizing the annual countywide 9-11 rembrance ceremony held each year at the County Fairgrounds.

An all volunteer committee that was organized to produce an annual Remembrance Ceremony and also worked diligently to establish the Salem County Park of Remembrance, constructed TOTALLY from donated funds as well as in kind services. The committee has now expanded it's mission after the County / Fire Academy received a significant piece of steel artifact from the Port Authority of NY/NJ in August.

The steel, originally a part of the South Tower, is now being prepped by students at the Salem County Vocational Technical High School for installation in a planned Memorial Park on the front lawn of the Department of Emergency Services Training Facility / Fire Academy, in Mannington Township. This Memorial Park will house the steel, fashioned to resemble the twin towers, as well as a monument depicting the names of fallen / deceased county emergency services personnel and an area in memoriam of those buried on the property which houses a paupers cemetery used years ago by the county when the County Home and Alms House were open. Stay tuned for updates on this project and the committee's activities.

The Park unfortunately is not adorned with mums and straw bales at the entrance which was always the case in previous years since its dedication. The grounds are in good shape for today, albeit a broken spotlight illuminating one of the state flags. Happy to see that someone prior to me placed a flower at the base of one of the WTC artifacts. Our rose was placed on the opposite “tower” honoring those lost on that fateful day. Darryl Worley’s song played on the phone while I took a few moments out of my life’s schedule to “remember” and honor the lost. Hopefully many of you reading this, may find the time to stop out to the Park of Remembrance to reflect upon our nation post 9-11 and pray for the families of those perished AND for those first responders we continue to lose to Ground Zero related diseases.

For many years on this day this song played at the beginning of the county remembrance ceremony either at the County Fairgrounds or at the Park of Remembrance, once it was completed. Today I’ll make the trek to the park to pay respects and I’ll play this song while I’m there in spite of the fact no ceremony will take place on that hallowed ground. So many souls are represented by or who may actually still be present on the WTC Steel artifacts or the rock artifact from the Shanksville, PA crash site…. I haven’t forgotten but seemingly many have…..

As we approach September on this, the 24th anniversary of that tragic day, please remember those lost and those first responders we continue loose each year to Ground Zero related health issues. We have been informed that "a county 9-11 service" will take place at the Habitat for Humanity/Re-Store location in Carneys Point during the daytime hours on 9-11-2025 as Habitat unveils a new flagpole and memorial area at their location. I am thinking Habitat and the Sheriff's Office will post additional information......
