🐾 Walk a Mile with Your Pet 🐾

Join us on Saturday, October 3rd, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM for our annual Walk a Mile with Your Pet event!

Did you know there is a direct correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence? Studies show that individuals who abuse animals are significantly more likely to abuse people. We walk to raise awareness, educate our community, and support survivors—both two-legged and four-legged.

We need your help to make this event a success! Here is how you can support:

Micro-Sponsorships & Cash Donations: Help cover event costs directly.

Prize Donations: We are looking for pet/owner costume contest prizes for both small and large dogs!

Refreshments: Donations of bottled water, juice boxes, or individual snacks for participants.

Whether you bring your furry friend to walk with us or support as a sponsor, your contribution makes a meaningful impact in our community.

📍 When: October 3rd | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

📩 How to Support: Send us a message or contact our office to donate items or become a sponsor!

🚨New Topic 🚨

What is elder abuse?

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention defines elder abuse as “an intentional act or failure to act that causes or creates a risk of harm to an older adult” (age 60 or older).

Elder abuse includes physical abuse, emotional/psychological abuse, sexual abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, and abandonment. Perpetrators include children, other family members, and spouses—as well as staff at nursing homes, assisted living, and other facilities.

• Physical abuse means inflicting physical pain or injury upon an older adult.

• Sexual abuse means touching, fondling, in*******se, or any other sexual activity with an older adult, when the older adult is unable to understand, unwilling to consent, threatened, or physically forced.

• Emotional/psychological abuse means verbal assaults, threats of abuse, harassment, or intimidation.

• Confinement means restraining or isolating an older adult, other than for medical reasons.

• Passive neglect is a caregiver’s failure to provide an older adult with life’s necessities, including, but not limited to, food, clothing, shelter, or medical care.

• Willful deprivation means denying an older adult medication, medical care, shelter, food, a therapeutic device, or other physical assistance, and exposing that person to the risk of physical, mental, or emotional harm—except when the older, competent adult has expressed a desire to go without such care.

• Financial exploitation means the misuse or withholding of an older adult’s resources by another.

May is National Trauma Awareness Month and NWDCS is here to shed some light on trauma.

Day 1: What is trauma informed care?

Trauma informed care means recognizing that many individuals have experienced trauma and then choosing to respond with compassion, safety, and respect. A trauma-informed approach focuses on creating environments where people feel heard, supported, and empowered rather than judged or retraumatized.

Trauma-formed care asks:
“What happened to you?”
Instead of
“What’s wrong with you?”
