Supporters,
I don't use this page often because it seems wrong to use it for anything other than a campaign for mayor, but I need some feedback on this.
We all know that Woonsocket is far above the minimum mandatory affordable housing guidelines. We all know that Woonsocket is in desperate need of economic activity.
We now have a proposal to renovate the old Mulvey's Hardware into an entrepreneurial engine including a food business incubator, a 400 person capacity function room for the Museum of Work and Culture, and a renovated outdoor area to host artist fairs and farmers markets. The second floor would be 6 loft-style affordable apartments. The building would be owned by a non-profit.
That nonprofit applied for - and won - a $350,000 grant that they used to leverage other funds. The city is failing to disburse those funds, and if the funds aren't in the right hands by the deadline, they are forfeit back to the federal government.
The conundrum is: Do we say no to more affordable housing at the expense of economic development?
The city is on the verge of losing a chance for real economic development at the former Mulvey's Hardware Building, Fisher writes.
