Genesis Club opened its doors on September 15, 1988 with 25 members. Twelve months prior, a committed and passionate Board of Directors decided that the city of Worcester should have a free-standing Clubhouse community. This decision was made after a visit to Fountain House in New York City, the first clubhouse model in the country. From a modest beginning, Genesis Club has developed a highly reco

gnized Accredited Clubhouse with Clubhouse International that is an Evidenced Based Practice with the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Genesis Club offers vocational training, education, employment, housing, wellness and social supports to over 550 members each year. Most importantly, Genesis Club offers a community of hope and dignity where recovery is possible. Genesis Club is one of twelve training centers of Clubhouse International. Since that time, the Genesis International Training Center has trained over 300 Clubhouses, 2000 colleagues from 35 states and 16 countries. Genesis Club strives to be a leading community partner with Worcester employers, landlords, families, colleges/universities and health care providers.

We are so proud of our members and staff who excelled in their studies and are making their dreams a reality. Join us in saying goodbye to our wonderful colleagues! We had a great 2 weeks with colleagues from Fontenehuset Harstad (Storgata, Harstad, Norway), PLAN at Katz Corner (Addison, TX), Katie’s Place Clubhouse (Scranton, PA), and Lotus House (Topeka, KS). These colleagues worked hard to deepen their understanding of the Clubhouse Model and will bring home their new knowledge to improve their Clubhouses. “It went by fast, but on some days it felt like we've been here for months!”

“ Every house tells the stories of the people and families who live in it.” This week, Genesis Club celebrated the people and the stories who live at 149 Belmont Street in Worcester! Twenty years ago the East Side CDC, the city of Worcester and Genesis Club partnered to revitalise an abandoned, tax- delinquent, three-family house. After four years of hard work and close collaboration, Cheri moved in as the very first tenant. She said at the celebration,” I’ve never felt so comfortable and safe!” More than thirty people have called “The Blue House” home over the last two decades. Here’s to another twenty years of building family and community!

Yesterday, Genesis Club welcomed health care providers, case managers, therapists and others from the health care arena for breakfast and a conversation about how important it is for their clients to have access to Clubhouse services. Executive Director Lisa Brennan stressed during the program that, “When people have access to community, purpose, and opportunity, – not just clinical treatment – their lives improve in ways that clinical care alone can’t achieve.” The program included a tour of each of the 6 work units and discussion of how the work of each unit contributes to member recovery in very practical ways. The event was part of the annual Week of Action, a national campaign organized by Clubhouse International and Fountain House (NYC) in an effort to increase investment in community-based mental health services and strengthen the policies that support Clubhouses across the country.
