The Wrangell Volunteer Fire Department received a report of and responded to a structure fire at approximately 8.5 Mile Zimovia Highway, yesterday afternoon at 3:37pm. The incident was initially reported as having no occupants inside.

Engine 8 departed the apron with 5 Firefighters onboard at 3:40pm and arrived on scene at 3:49.

Upon arrival, crews found the structure with heavy fire involvement on the second story and loft area, with significant roof compromise. Fire personnel identified that one occupant was still on the 2nd story porch of the structure, having attempted re-entry while attempting to locate family pets. The individual became trapped on the elevated porch when their exit route was cut off by rapidly advancing heat and fire conditions.

Firefighters, working in coordination with a local United States Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer and a civilian bystander, successfully deployed ladders and rescued the individual from a second-story porch.

One person was transported to Wrangell Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The structure sustained substantial damage to the second story and loft.

WVFD responded with three Fire Engines, one water Tanker, the Squad Van, and two Ambulances.

Additional support was provided by:

• Wrangell Police Department, assisting with fireground operations and traffic control
• Wrangell Public Works, assisting with water shuttle operations, utilizing their water tender
• Alaska Department of Transportation crews, who responded with an ARFF unit and assisted with fire suppression and water supply

WVFD would also like to recognize the United States Forest Service personnel for their early reporting of the fire and for alerting the occupants of the home, which contributed to a successful rescue outcome.

Sadly, several family pets were unable to be rescued.

This incident serves as an important reminder that conditions inside a structure fire can deteriorate rapidly. If a fire occurs, occupants are strongly urged to evacuate immediately and not attempt re-entry.

Today, the members of the Wrangell Volunteer Fire Department pause to remember and honor Rescue Swimmer Tyler Jaggers of the United States Coast Guard, Air Station Astoria.

Those of us who respond to emergencies in Southeast Alaska know that when the call comes in and the weather is at its worst, the Coast Guard is often the one coming to the rescue. Rescue swimmers represent the very best of that commitment, professionals who willingly enter some of the most dangerous conditions imaginable so that others might make it home.

Tyler Jaggers embodied that mission. His service, courage, and sacrifice stand as a reminder of the quiet heroism carried out every day by Coast Guard crews and rescue swimmers across the nation.

From our department to the entire Coast Guard family, we extend our deepest condolences to Tyler’s family, friends, and shipmates. Please know your service does not go unnoticed by those of us who work alongside you in the emergency response community.

Fair winds and following seas, Tyler. We have the watch.

Our brother Tyler has flown west into the arms of the Creator. May God comfort His family and our Coast Guard Family.

Tonight, we are proud to recognize four dedicated members stepping into leadership roles and joining WVFD’s longstanding group of officers.

Leadership within WVFD is built on the foundation set by the officers who have served before them and those who continue to lead with integrity, experience, and commitment. We are grateful for the example they set and the standard they uphold.

👨🏽‍🚒 Assistant Chief Zach – With 15 years of service, Zach has consistently demonstrated commitment both on and off the scene. He is always willing to step up behind the scenes—tackling paperwork, drafting new policies, and helping ensure our department continues to move forward. His steady leadership, attention to detail, and dedication to accountability make him a strong addition to our command staff.

🧯Captain Scott – Bringing 20 years of service to this role, Scott exemplifies a strong command presence and exceptional instructor qualities. He leads confidently on scene, makes sound decisions under pressure, and takes pride in mentoring others. His experience and ability to guide and develop members make him a valuable leader within our department.

🔥Lieutenant Aaron – With 10 years of experience—9 years previously serving on the department and the last year following his recent return—Aaron brings valuable knowledge and perspective to his role. He leads by example through accountability, professionalism, and a calm presence on scene. His ability to connect with members and reinforce high standards makes him a dependable and respected leader.

🚒 Lieutenant Anna – With 4 years of service, Anna continues to demonstrate enthusiasm and a strong commitment to growth. In her role as Fire/EMS Admin, she shows initiative, organization, and dedication to supporting both operations and personnel. Her positive attitude and willingness to take on responsibility reflect the qualities of an emerging leader within WVFD.

To all of our officers—past and present—thank you for the leadership, accountability, and professionalism you bring to WVFD every day. Your commitment to mentoring, setting high standards, and serving this community does not go unnoticed.

Please join us in congratulating these officers as they step confidently into their new roles. The future of WVFD remains strong because of leaders like these.

Thank you concerned citizens

The FD is aware of a controlled burn happening up behind the hospital. No need to fear just another typical Tuesday project of clearing property.

🚨 REMINDER TO ALL DRIVERS 🚨

When you see or hear an emergency vehicle responding with lights and sirens, please slow down and safely pull over to the right as soon as possible. This simple action helps first responders reach those in need faster and keeps everyone on the road safe.

🚑🚒🚓 PLEASE ALSO NOTE:
Many of our community’s emergency responders are volunteers who respond to emergencies in their personal vehicles equipped with blue flashing lights. These vehicles are actively responding to emergencies and should be treated the same as any other emergency vehicle.

Your awareness and cooperation can truly make a difference—and may help save a life. Thank you for helping keep our responders and community safe.
