Last week Wray Police Department responded to a possible scam call. The reporting party had been contacted via their computer and told that “Microsoft” would repair their computer for a fee totaling in the thousands. Wray Police successfully arrested the individual that arrived to collect the funds. The arrestee was taken into custody for Theft (C.R.S. 18-4-401) and Impersonation (C.R.S. 18-5-113) with an at-risk enhancer due to the age of the victim.
While this incident ended pretty well for our Wray residents, we have seen an increase and change in scam reports. Scam calls will clone local numbers and try to say that they are from local area business or financial institutions. They have been known to request funds on prepaid gift cards. Or they will tell you that they have money owed to you and would like to direct deposit it into your bank account. Some are bold enough to travel and collect funds in person. They may tell you to leave money or cards under a door mat or inside your mail box. Please STOP, CHECK, and PROTECT!
STOP – Never act on their request immediately.
CHECK – Verify through a separate source. Call your local bank or credit card using the number you find on your statement. Speak with someone you trust.
PROTECT – Never give out your passwords, social security number, or banking information on the phone or in an email.
