Here’s a mental health tip from a therapist! Did you know visualization can help reduce stress by 30%? One of my favorite simple practices is pairing it with something you already do — like your daily shower.

Mindful Tip: As you shower, visualize all the stress, tension, and worries you’re carrying flowing down the drain. Imagine each drop of water taking away what no longer serves you.

This technique is called pairing — linking a new, helpful habit to something you already do — which makes it easier to stick with practices that support your mental health. Even a one-minute visualization can calm your nervous system, help you feel lighter, and give you a reset for the day.

If you or someone you love could use extra support, reach out to Compass by filling out the form below (takes 2 minutes)— we’re here to help.

Warmly,
Carolyn Whalen, LICSW

Stress & Emotional Awareness

One minute to understand your emotions. Welcome to Mindful Minute with Compass, a one-minute read created to support your well-being and help you better understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

Stress doesn’t always show up as panic or overwhelm.

Sometimes it shows up sideways. It can look like irritability, snapping at people you care about, feeling unusually tired, shutting down, or wanting to withdraw. These reactions aren’t character flaws. They’re often signs that something deeper is asking for your attention.

When you notice a strong reaction, pause and gently ask yourself, “What emotion might be underneath this?” Maybe it’s sadness, fear, disappointment, or exhaustion. Approach the answer with curiosity, not judgment. Curiosity creates insight. Judgment shuts it down.

Even a brief moment of awareness can help you feel more grounded and less overwhelmed. You don’t have to fix the feeling right away. Simply noticing it can lighten the emotional load and bring a sense of relief.

And remember, you don’t have to navigate this alone. If you or someone you love could use support, Compass is here to help. Reaching out is a meaningful step toward clarity, balance, and emotional well-being.

Sometimes life gets busy, and you stop going to therapy.

Life often moves fast, and sometimes we pause the things that nourish us — including therapy. People stop for many reasons: work, school, family obligations, feeling “okay,” or simply needing space. Every pause is understandable, and it doesn’t diminish the value of the work you’ve done or the care you deserve. your reason, it’s completely normal, and you’re not alone.

We just wanted to say — we miss you.

Returning to therapy is a lifelong gift, helping you reconnect with yourself and isn’t just about addressing a crisis; it’s about investing in yourself, nurturing your growth, and strengthening your resilience for whatever life brings.

Getting back into care can be simple. You can fill out our intake form in just 2 minutes, and we’ll help match you with the right therapist and schedule. Therapists don’t take it personally when clients take breaks, so you’re welcome to continue with the same therapist, or explore working with someone new. Either choice is a step toward your well-being.

Every step toward care is meaningful. Whenever you’re ready, we’re here to walk alongside you.

Warmly,
Compass

Getting started again is simple. You can fill out our intake form in 2 minutes or less, and we’ll help match you with the right therapist and schedule.

Navigating Change

Welcome to Mindful Minute with Compass, a quick read designed to support your well-being and help you navigate life’s transitions with a little more ease.

Mindful Tip:

Life is always changing. New roles, routines, and responsibilities, even positive opportunities, can leave us feeling unsettled. It is completely normal to experience discomfort during these times. Change can feel like standing in the middle of two worlds, the old familiar and the new unknown, and that in-between space can feel heavy or uncertain.

Mindful Tip: Instead of pushing the discomfort away or trying to rush through it, pause and notice it. Name it quietly to yourself: “I’m feeling unsettled and that’s okay.” Simply acknowledging your feelings gives them room to exist without judgment and allows them to move naturally, rather than getting stuck or building up inside.

Remember, you don’t have to navigate these transitions alone. If you or someone you love could use guidance, support, or just someone to listen, Compass Social Skills and Counseling is here. Accepting the in-between moments with care and attention is a small but powerful step toward calm, clarity, and well-being.

Studies show that up to 74% of people report feeling anxious before, during, or after family gatherings

Holidays with family can be full of joy but they can also stir up old tensions or highlight tricky dynamics.

Expectations run high, and despite our best efforts to make the day perfect, the same frustrating family dynamics often play out, leaving many disappointed or drained.

Here are a few ways to protect your well-being while still celebrating:

1. Set small boundaries:
Decide ahead of time what conversations or situations you’re willing to engage in, and what you might step away from. Even tiny boundaries help preserve your emotional energy.

2. Plan mindful pauses:
Take a few moments to breathe, step outside, or check in with your body. Just 60 seconds of intentional grounding can reset your nervous system.

3. Keep expectations realistic:
Holidays rarely go perfectly. Notice and savor small moments of joy instead of aiming for perfection.

4. Give yourself permission to leave or take a break:
Stepping away for a walk or ending a difficult conversation early is not a failure — it’s a healthy choice.

You’re not alone — it’s very common to feel stressed around family holidays, and taking care of yourself is part of making the season truly meaningful.

Ready to take the next step?
Fill out your intake form (it only takes 2 minutes!) and tell your new therapist all about your holiday experiences — the challenges, the triumphs, and everything in between. Sharing these details helps your therapist support you in the most meaningful way.

If you or someone you love could use extra support navigating family dynamics or holiday stress, Compass is here to walk alongside you.

Wishing you calm, connection, and small moments of joy this Easter,

I know what it’s like to feel like there’s no time for therapy. As a busy therapist myself, finding time to take care of my own mental health felt almost impossible — until I discovered telehealth. Now I can fit sessions into my schedule, even having a session from my car on really hectic days

Telehealth is the solution! It removes the barriers of wasting time driving to an office and awkwardly waiting in a waiting room, and makes therapy fit around your life, not the other way around.

Thanks to telehealth, you can have a session from your home, on your lunch break at work, between meetings, or even in your car. Telehealth makes therapy flexible, convenient, and highly effective — studies show over 75% of people report significant improvements in anxiety, stress, and overall well-being after regular sessions.

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy but your schedule feels impossible, fill out the form below and let us figure out the rest. It’s possible to take care of your mental health, even on your busiest days — I promise!

Warmly,
Carolyn Whalen, LICSW
