Regarding the “Cat in the Hat” Social Media Trend

The Wright City Police Department has been made aware of a viral social media trend referred to as the “Cat in the Hat”. In some versions of this activity, accounts have circulated lists naming Oklahoma schools and individual students, along with the saying, “coming for” those students. These posts have appeared on TikTok, Snapchat, and other social medias, and often include AI-generated images or videos.

After reviewing the information available to our agency, and discussing the issue with the principals at Wright City School we have found no reason to believe there is a credible threat to Wright City Schools or to any student, or staff member in our community. Nothing we have seen indicates an imminent or specific plan to cause harm here.

This does not mean this matter is being dismissed. Any communication that names our school or students and uses threatening or intimidating language is taken seriously. Our police department and school administrators, and staff will continue to monitor it, and will follow established threat-assessment and safety protocols. We will remain in close communication with Wright City School on this matter.

We understand that content of this kind can cause genuine fear, even when it is later determined to be a prank or an internet trend. Students and staff count on a safe, focused, and distraction-free learning environment every day. Parents have every right to expect that concerns involving their children will be treated with care and professionalism.

• If your child receives a message, image, friend request, or post that names them, their school, or makes them feel unsafe, please save screenshots and report it immediately to a school administrator or the Wright City Police Department.

• Do not share personal information online, including last names, addresses, school schedules, bus stops, or current location.

• Do not attempt to contact, confront, or “investigate” the account or person behind a post. Report it to law enforcement or school officials and allow us to handle it.

• Talk with your children about the difference between a viral prank and a real threat.

Creating or sharing content that threatens a school or a student can have serious legal consequences, including criminal charges. What may begin as a joke can quickly become a crime when it causes fear and disrupts a school. We will investigate and pursue charges when the facts support it.

Our police department and Wright City School staff remain committed to the safety of every student and employee. Additional precautions will be taken if new information arises.

If you have information, questions, or a concern that needs to be reported, please contact Wright City Police Department at 580-981-2100 You may also report concerns directly to your child’s school.
