What can a cemetery tell us?
Sometimes, much more than names and dates.
Smith Chapel Cemetery traces its beginnings to 1871, when U.S. Colored Troops returning home from the Civil War purchased an acre of land for a schoolhouse for their children, a church, and a cemetery.
Several of the men who helped establish the church had themselves been freedom seekers who defied their enslavers and risked their lives to join the Union troops.
Today, Smith Chapel Cemetery helps preserve the stories of these families and a remarkable piece of Missouri history.
Join us at Scenic Regional Library Wright City on Thursday, September 3 at 6 pm to hear local historian and genealogist Dorris Keeven-Franke share the story of Smith Chapel Cemetery and its connection to the Underground Railroad. Space limited, Registration Required

73 YEARS AGO TO THIS DAY.
On September 28, 1953, a woman walked into a Catholic school in Kansas City and convinced the nuns that a little boy’s mother had fallen ill and she needed to take him to her.
About an hour later, the child was dead.
What followed became one of Missouri’s most horrifying crimes and just 81 days later, his killers sat side-by-side in the gas chamber at the Missouri State Penitentiary.
And this year, on the 73rd anniversary of the Greenlease Kidnapping, we’ll be gathering to hear the chilling story from Missouri State Penitentiary tour guide and Show Me Murder host Mike Lear.
There is something especially haunting about telling this story on the very date it began.
