On Saturday, station crews along with the Cutter Bayberry had the honor of being on hand for the paddleout for Ocean Rescue Captain Jeremy Owens. For many, this was our first experience with a paddleout, and it was amazing to see everyone on the water. Afterwards we were able to get some great training in with the Bayberry that resulted in a new certified coxswain! All and all, a great day to be on the water to honor a great person, and train new lifesavers to carry on in Capt Owens' legacy.

As we get back into the swing of marine events after a year filled with cancelations. We wanted to take a moment to remind folks that things such as regattas, swim races, fireworks, etc need to file an application for those events. Understanding that many of these events may have new coordinators organizing things, we wanted to share the attached letter to make sure everyone knows the procedures for filing their applications.

Everyone has a cell phone right? You're probably using it right now. The question is will it work in an emergency? How far offshore will you have a signal, or might you just be in a dead spot when you really need it? Here's a piece of gear every boater should have, and know how to operate.

Some of the most important boating safety tips are also the simplest. We get asked all the time what sorts of things we look for in deciding to stop and board boats. While there are many different reasons, this one right here is a sure fire way to draw our officers' attention.

Couldn't be more proud of our own BM2 Williamson, truly a hero. If anyone witnessed the rescue, or even better has video of it, please reach out to us!

What started as a normal day at the beach quickly took a turn Sunday at Fort Fisher as beachgoers watched in horror as three men were swept out in a rip current.

Good job Aids to Navigation team Oak island for always keeping our waterways safe.

We'll keep the light on for you.

--------------------------

The Coast Guard lit a first of its kind LED-based rotating beacon at Oak Island Lighthouse on Caswell Beach, N.C., Dec. 7, 2020.

"Lighthouses have navigational and historic significance here in North Carolina," said Lt. Brittany Akers, chief of waterways management at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina. “The Oak Island Lighthouse is especially notable as it marks the entrance to the Cape Fear River. The modernization of the light will ensure its continued reliable service to the mariner in a cost-effective way that respects the historical significance of the lighthouse."

Thank you to the outstanding crew who made our Burial at Sea ceremony such a beautiful memory for our family. We appreciate your service!
Happy Fourth of July 🇺🇸 and thank you coastguard for keeping everyone safe and staying always on the ready.
Big shout out to this station. My son is heading off to A School and received a text that he needed to get his Float Plan finished. He could not get logged on to a computer and called this station and asked to use the computer to get his work done. He said everyone was super nice and happily opened the doors for someone they didn’t know and didn’t have to. In his short time in the US Coast Guard, the one thing that stands out and I think Admiral Schultz and MCPO Vanderhaden preach it... they are a TEAM!!!!! #SemperParatus #ProudCoastGuardDad
Free camps for military dependents available ATHENS, Ga. – Teen dependents ages 14-18 of military service members are invited to apply before May 1 to two camps coordinated by the University of Georgia. The University of Georgia 4-H program has coordinated camps such as these since 2010 at locations in Georgia and Florida. “The summits offer military dependents an opportunity to build leadership and life skills in a high adventure environment,” said Laura Goss, Georgia 4-H Military Camp Coordinator. “Teenagers have the opportunity to have fun while connecting with teens to better understand their parent’s military service through targeted lessons, social interactions, and service member volunteers. Youth gain independence, mastery, and belonging." The University of Georgia operates these two summer camps through the Military Teen Adventure Camps, a partnership funded by the Department of Defense between the Office of Military Community and Family Policy and the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture through a grant/cooperative agreement with Purdue University. Camps are open to dependents ages 14-18 of military members currently serving in active or reserve components. Camp fees, including transportation from the closest major airport, are covered through grant funds. The available weeks follow: • Joint Component Teen Leadership Summit - June 14-19, 2020, Dahlonega, Georgia • Islands Military Teen Leadership Summit – July 12-17, 2020, Jekyll Island, Georgia Applicants can learn more online at: Joint Summit or Islands Summit through the Georgia 4-H Military Partnership Camp pages and can apply through the Georgia 4-H Event Registration page at https://secure.georgia4h.org/event/?clientID=4 . We ask that applicants apply by May 15th. The online application requires demographic information as well as short answers and essay responses. Applications will be reviewed by a committee and notifications of acceptance will be sent soon after. Most expenses (airfare, camp registration) are supported by the Military Teen Adventure Camps. Parents/guardians are responsible for transportation to the closest major airport, baggage fees, and spending money for snacks, souvenirs, and limited travel day snacks. Also, unaccompanied minor fees are covered on at-needs basis when funds are available. More information will be provided to those accepted to attend. Youth are supervised during the week by well-trained staff in camping and youth development. Adult volunteers supplement the paid camp staff and include many service members, spouses and family members. All paid and volunteer staff complete youth protections training and undergo a background investigation in accordance with University of Georgia policies. We encourage military spouses, Military members (Retired/current) to apply to serve as volunteers. Volunteers play a major role at camp through participating in activities, supervising youth, chaperoning cabins, assisting classroom time, and other related roles. To apply to be an adult volunteer, download an application from the GA 4-H Military Webpage volunteer page. Reach out to a staff member at [email protected].
