Starting today, much of South and Central Georgia are under a burn ban as we continue to respond to wildfires and deal with ongoing drought conditions.

We're asking all Georgians to do your part in preventing the spread of wildfires as response teams work around the clock to contain those currently blazing.

[ Thursday Afternoon Update ] Here are the latest official snow forecast amounts for Georgia. These amounts will continue to be tailored heading into the weekend. Snow could begin as early as Friday evening over north Georgia and end through the day Saturday. Any accumulations will create slick roadways and dangerous driving conditions.

An Extreme Cold Watch is now in effect for all of Georgia from Saturday evening through early Sunday afternoon. Wind Chills - or feels like temperatures - of 5 degrees or below are expected. Take the time to protect people, pets, plants and pipes this weekend.

Update:

We have been made aware of 4 different counties now that this subject has been conducting this suspicious activity in. Again, we want to reiterate, if you encounter this individual do not engage him in any way. Immediately call 911 and report it.

We will continue to look for the individual, and Investigate the suspicious activity.

Public Service Announcement.

The Wrightsville Police Department received a complaint yesterday (Friday, 1/23/2026) in reference to suspicious activity in a residential area by an unknown individual (picture attached), driving a silver in color Prius. A residential doorbell camera caught the vehicle passing by the residence numerous times before the subject parked his vehicle a couple houses down, enter onto the property, ring the doorbell, and then fled on foot after what appeared to be him realizing there was a camera.

The Wrightsville Police Department has since learned of a similar incident in Laurens County involving the same individual and vehicle. In this incident the individual can be seen on door bell camera using his cell phone to record the property and the residence, and then again fleeing on foot after what appeared to be him realizing there was a camera.

If anyone comes in contact with the individual in question do not attempt to engage the individual in any manner. Contact Law Enforcement immediately.

Also, if anyone recognizes the individual pictured please contact Law Enforcement. Any help identifying the individual in question would be greatly appreciated.

As of right now this is an open investigation into the suspicious activity of this individual.

On Wednesday January 21st 2026, Staff from The Wrightsville Police Department, Wrightsville City Hall, and Wrightsville City Council attended the Central Georgia EMS Region 5 Awards Banquet at Indian Springs State Park to observe The Central Georgia Region 5 Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council present the Trauma Save Award and The Medal of Valor to Officer Jay Hood of The Wrightsville Police Department for his actions in an incident involving a critically injured firefighter during a traumatic event.

Officer Jay Hood's composure and quick actions saved the life of Fire Fighter Chad Wombles, along with possibly saving himself and 2 others inside of the establishment.

The Wrightsville Police Department would also like to recognize and thank The Johnson County Sheriff's Office for their quick response and assistance on scene. The Johnson County Sheriff's Office also showed great poise under extreme circumstances.

Furthermore, The Wrightsville Police Department would like to recognize the efforts of the responding First Responders, Johnson County Fire Department, Johnson County EMS, and Fairview Park Hospital for their assistance in this traumatic event.

Because of the combined effort from all the above mentioned Emergency Personnel, several lives were spared that night.

The Wrightsville Police Department would also just like to say that the response and teamwork from all of the involved Wrightsville/Johnson County Emergency Personnel shows just how great our community is and how the community all come together in extreme circumstances to help anyone and everyone in need.

To Officer Jay Hood, you are greatly appreciated!!

A major winter storm and potential ice storm will move through the Eastern U.S. this weekend. Impacts are expected in north Georgia and now is the time to prepare! The forecast isn't as certain for central Georgia, but this is still a situation you should monitor closely.
