We had a good turnout today at the booth. There were a lot of new faces that were interested in the project and we sold a lot of shirts and hats. Thanks for stopping by. We will be there again tomorrow. Stop by and say hi.

This weekend in Wrightwood is Mountaineer Days, July 8-9.

Members from the Wrightwood Veterans Memorial will have a booth setup alongside the Blue Ridge Inn on the way into the community center parking lot. Thank you Chuck and Mel Lyons for the use of the spot.

Stop by to find out about the pavers in the memorial and how you can order one for yourself, a family member or friend. There will also be T-shirts and our new item, hats. These can be had for a donation which goes to the memorial fund. Things like flag replacement that are needed at least once per year come from this fund. All donations are tax deductible.

If you have 1/2 hour or and hour to spare, bring a chair and sit out with other members under the shade to learn more about what the Wrightwood Veterans Memorial is all about. You will be surprised by how many people from town you will recognize and who you might meet.

"Membership" in the group is free to any service member, past or present, or civilian regardless of age. This is done to bring awareness to all that have served, those who are currently serving or are planning to serve.

Please make it a point to stop by and say hi. You will be glad you did. See you over the weekend.

Eleven “bells” ring out beginning of the annual Veterans Day ceremony!

Continuing a tradition bringing together the community to honor her Military Veterans, members of the Tri-Community Area will gather Friday, November 11th for the 13th annual Veterans Day Ceremony, held special as locals practice the historical Armistice Day observance that Veterans Day stems from. Veteran Memorial volunteer Ron Jaqua will strike Eleven bells on the Armistice Day Bell to signal the beginning of the formal ceremony, exactly at 11 a.m., the time of signing of the “armistice” ending the “War to end all wars, World War I.”

Wrightwood Veterans Memorial President Allan Miller will have welcomed the Wrightwood School Chorus, led by Principal John Garner prior to the start of the formal ceremony as they sing a number of patriotic songs before the striking of the bell. Miller will then conduct the hour long ceremony that includes Claudia Campbell singing the National Anthem, inspirational words by Pastor Dave Conrad, the reading of the latest 27 Memorial Brick entries in the Veterans Memorial Brick Courtyard by Captain Tom Pinard and Lora Steinmann, presentation by Joyce Gwinner and local Quilters of a Quilt of Valor to a local Veteran, the changing out of the National Ensign by local Boy Scouts, the traditional Wreath Laying with Girl Scouts assisting, and music by the Serrano High School Band.

Harlan Lassiter will provide the POW/MIA tribute table and Wendi Schwab and her crew will have coordinated and arranged the latest Memorial Bricks in the Memorial Grounds prior to the event.

“We hope that all Villagers will join us at our Veterans Memorial in the Village Center,” continued Miller, “these ceremonies remind us all of the sacrifice that our young men and women make who serve their nation in the military, during peace and in war.”
Dress according to the weather and bring a chair.

August 7th is National Purple Heart Day in honor of those killed or wounded while in service to our country. Many of our "fathers and forefathers" were awarded this medal and today we honor their sacrifice. The forerunner to the Purple Heart was established on this day in 1782 by George Washington, whose profile is on today's medal.

Stop by our booth during the Mountaineer Days (July 9-10) during the next two days located in the walkway into the food court.

We will have T shirts for sale and information on how to order pavers. The next installation of pavers will be done in November for Veterans Day.

Subject: Wrightwood Veteran's Memorial: Manning the Veterans Memorial booth Mountaineer Days

I think having a booth for Mountaineer Days, July 9th and 10th is a great idea and I thank Harlan, with inputs from Hank and others, regarding getting it going. In discussions with Hank, he is concerned there won’t be enough folks to staff the booth. I can’t make it but am putting out a plea, our President is on a well earned vacation so I’m stepping in as Vice President to send this request for volunteers.

If folks will sign up for a two hour stint in the booth--which will be located in the alley to the community parking lot--for Saturday and/or Sunday, we would need six people on Saturday and six folks on Sunday. The booth would be active 10 am to 4 pm.

We have two or three new folks who want to get involved, they could fill in a two hour shift with an old hand. The first shift Saturday and Sunday should be someone who can access the shirts and other stuff necessary from the back of the Travel-All in my garage (we’ll need to coordinate that with Babs Thompson, who has access to the garage). Obviously, there needs to be folks able to get the supplies back to the Travel-All either Mountaineer Days weekend or later.

Please, old “Veterans of the WVM Committee” and our new folks, step forward and pull a shift if you can.

Contact Hank at [email protected] or 760-249-3069 or Harlan at [email protected] and volunteer. Many hands make light the work.

Hank talked with Janice who is in charge to placing all the booths for Mt. Days. She indicated that the food vendors, etc and music will be in the parking area btwn the bank and the community bldg.

She also thinks that it has great pedestrian traffic and agrees 100% that the location on Chuck's property in the alley is the most advantageous location for the Veterans booth.

Hank can help with sales just not with the setting up of the booth. Dee Potter has also volunteered to help with sales. We need someone to coordinate with Tom & Babs about picking up the t-shirts!
