Teddy Bear Clinic Gives LFH Second Graders a Healthy Dose of Fun

Lafrancis Hardiman Elementary School’s second graders recently brought their favorite teddy bears and stuffed animals to school for a hands-on Teddy Bear Clinic, where they learned about the many roles of healthcare professionals through interactive activities. The event was organized by Board of Education Trustee Shameka Brown and staffed by volunteers from Good Samaritan University Hospital.

Working in small groups, students guided their “patients” through eight different hospital stations, including triage and registration, imaging, surgery, pharmacy, dentistry, nutrition and healthy living, cardiology and pediatrics, and discharge and recovery. Along the way, they checked vital signs, took pretend X-rays, bandaged injuries, learned about healthy habits, listened to heartbeats and even practiced brushing their teddy bears’ teeth.

The engaging experience introduced students to the world of healthcare while helping ease fears about medical visits in a fun, supportive and age-appropriate environment.

Golf Day at LFH Enhances Math and Reading Skills

In partnership with New York Edge, Lafrancis Hardiman Elementary School held a Golf Day on June 10. In the classroom, students participated in golf-themed activities across all areas of the curriculum. Outside, they explored an 18-hole miniature golf course, practicing their math skills when scoring and their reading skills as they attempted different challenges such as standing on one leg.

High School Performing Arts Showcase Celebrates Creativity and Growth

Wyandanch Memorial High School held its annual Performing Arts Showcase on June 3 in the school auditorium, giving scholars the opportunity to share their talents and celebrate a year of hard work, dedication and artistic growth. Led by Assistant Principal Deven Kane and Acting Principal Noel Rios, the evening highlighted the creativity, confidence and perseverance of student performers across multiple disciplines.

The showcase featured performances by the Xclusive Dance Team, directed and choreographed by Angelique Shannon; the Drama Club, directed by John Rickenbacker; the chorus and Elite Wolves vocal ensembles, directed by Nickolette Kacharaba; and the concert, jazz and marching bands, directed by Nick Liddie.

Throughout the evening, students demonstrated the skills they developed over the course of the school year while entertaining family, staff and community members with a variety of musical, theatrical and dance performances.

Wyandanch Junior Selected for Prestigious Cold Spring Harbor Lab Internship

Wyandanch Memorial High School junior Andy Polanco Tejada, a member of the school’s P-Tech program, was recently selected for the prestigious Ellen Brenner Memorial Internship. This opportunity offers a stipend to high school students to work on a mentored summer project at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Library and Archives. Experienced science informationists, librarians and archivists at the lab will serve as mentors to the Brenner interns.

The P-Tech program is one of several innovative STEM initiatives within the WySTAR (Wyandanch Science, Technology and Research) program at Wyandanch Memorial High School.

Wyandanch Musicians Strike a High Note at Music in the Parks Festival

Wyandanch Memorial High School’s marching band and chorus recently earned top honors at the Music in the Parks festival at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey.

Both ensembles received Superior ratings and captured first place in their respective categories. In addition, the groups were recognized as Best Overall Chorus and Best Overall Marching Band, highlighting the exceptional talent and dedication of Wyandanch’s student musicians.

“Our students represented Wyandanch Memorial High School with excellence, respect and pride,” teacher Nickolette Kacharaba said. “Congratulations to all of our talented musicians and directors on this incredible accomplishment.”

MLK Class Connects with Pen Pals Through Yearlong Letter Exchange

All year long, Joshua Barrett’s class at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School exchanged letters with fourth grade students at Roy G. Eversole Elementary School in Hazard, Kentucky, building friendships and learning about one another through handwritten correspondence.

The students recently celebrated the culmination of the project with a Zoom call, giving them the opportunity to finally see each other face-to-face after months of exchanging letters.

Elementary Scholars Celebrate Learning Through Animal Adventures

Scholars at Lafrancis Hardiman Elementary School recently enjoyed two memorable animal-themed learning experiences that brought excitement and curiosity into the classroom.

As part of an annual tradition, Cheryl Dimperio’s second-grade class hatched chicks in the classroom, giving students a firsthand look at the early stages of animal life. The experience was shared schoolwide through a Google Meet livestream, allowing students and staff throughout the building to witness the chicks hatching in real time.

Meanwhile, Tamiko Rice’s class celebrated National Turtle Day with a turtle-themed read-aloud and writers workshop. The celebration also featured a special visit from a real turtle, giving excited students the opportunity to observe and learn more about the fascinating reptile up close.
