With the permission from the family, we will now release the following information about a recent life that was saved. A patient who was eating with a group of people, suddenly collapsed. A bystander (if he wants to share his name he can however we don’t have permission from him yet) instantly jumped into action. He performed two rounds of chest compressions before EMS arrival. Wymore EMS, assisted by Wymore Fire arrived on scene. Wymore EMS Chief Shawna Argo, NREMT-EMSI and Wymore Fire Chief Mark Meints, EMT quickly assessed the situation and started CPR and Rescue Breathing. Other support staff members of both departments, including Max Allen, EMT who arrived on scene, assisted in gathering equipment needed, etc. An AED was used several times successfully and the patient regained a pulse. BFR arrived on scene to assist as well and it was determined the best chance of survival for the patient was to transport him by air to BryanLGH East. We are happy to say the patient survived and the doctor stated that he had an 80% blockage and had it not been for the early emergency care received he would not have survived. The patient underwent surgery and will be released tomorrow. Those persons involved will be honored with a code save from the State of Nebraska tentatively in June. We love good outcomes and thanks to the family for keeping us updated. We hope the patient can join us during the recognition. We don’t do this for the glory but for the life that can be saved. Please keep everyone who knew and loved Gordon in your thoughts and prayers!

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Firefighter Gordon Michaelis, a devoted member of our fire family.

Gordon served our department for over 50 years, including many years as Chief, leaving behind a legacy that cannot be measured. His love for the fire service, his compassion for others, and his unmatched knowledge and experience shaped generations of school children, other members kids and firefighters.

Gordon was often the first to tell you when you were wrong, but just as quickly, he would show you how to do it right. He believed in doing the job correctly, safely, and with pride, and he never hesitated to step in and help when someone needed guidance.

He was a mentor to many, a leader to all, and truly family to this department. His readiness to help, steady presence, and dedication to service will never be forgotten.

We will miss Gordon more than words can express. His impact will live on in every lesson taught, every call answered, and every firefighter he helped shape along the way.

Rest easy, Gordon. Your watch is over.

As many of you know, several of us Wymore Emergency Medical Services members are also Firefighters with Barneston Rural Volunteer Fire Department. This project was huge and very much appreciated. Thank you to all who have made this possible. We never want to have to have a situation where it’s needed, but having the opportunity to have it available makes everyone’s job so much easier. Thank you Gene and everyone else.
