On June 15, 2021, the Police Free CSD group posted on Instagram, several pictures of an event that involved our members at the Wyncote Elementary School. They opined that the event “exposed elementary school children to unnecessary harm, hate speech and racist symbols.” They continued that, “Policing cannot be separated from its racist, classist, ableist and heteropatriarchal origins – even when cloaked in a more friendly, benevolent form.”
This “injurious event” that they are “appalled and disappointed” about was a celebration of Officer Jackie Hinchee’s upcoming retirement. Officer Hinchee served for years as the Cheltenham School District’s School Liaison Officer. During her tenure, she built bridges, opened lines of communication between the police and the students of CSD, served as a strong female role model and as an advocate for the many student victims of crime. Jackie poured herself into this position and did more to improve the quality of life for many marginalized students than any one existing advocacy group has done, or purports to do. To disparage her years of dedicated, compassionate, and empathetic service is intellectually dishonest and is an outright disrespect to her character and the character of the men and women who we represent.
The past year has stressed police/community relationships in many communities to the breaking point. We all recognize that there is work to be done, discussions to be had and solutions to generate. The men and women who compose the CTPA are passionately committed to building bridges, it is very unfortunate that groups like the Police Free CSD are committed to building walls.
I challenge the Township Staff, Commissioners, and the citizens of Cheltenham Township to decide what type of community we want to live, work, and learn. We will continue to safeguard the rights, freedoms, property, and lives of those we are entrusted to protect. Please help us do our jobs better by encouraging us, rather than unjustifiably vilifying an officer who has served our community in ways that we will never be able to adequately acknowledge or recognize.
Best wishes on your retirement Jackie, your efforts do not go unnoticed or, more importantly, unappreciated.
