“What are your goals?”

For one teen in foster care, that simple question changed everything.

When CASA volunteer Marcia met Hunter, she didn’t come with a plan—she came ready to listen. What followed was a journey from uncertainty to confidence, from “maybe someday” to real opportunity.

A library. A volunteer role. A growing belief in himself.

This is what happens when one person shows up and truly sees a child.

✨ Read how one connection made a lasting impact—and how you can be part of stories like Hunter’s.

Because sometimes, changing a life starts with just one question.

Have you ever wondered who volunteers to advocate for a child in foster care? How much time does it take? Why do they do it year after year? CASA Alina took some time to answer your questions.

What do you enjoy about your CASA service?
Children in foster care live lives where changes happen often. The idea that I can provide stability to a child throughout the process is meaningful to me.

What is the hardest thing about being a CASA volunteer?
The foster care system is not without flaws and working within that system can be challenging. It is important to find ways to remain focused on advocating for our children.

What is the most surprising thing that has happened to you as a CASA volunteer?
I was surprised at the length of time many of these children remain in the system. I know there is a goal to provide stability within a certain timeframe but often this is not the reality.

Why should someone take the step to become a CASA volunteer?
Relationships are what bring change. The CASA position is built around the idea of building a relationship and staying committed to a child throughout their time in the system. It is not easy, but it is meaningful.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
🔄 Breaking the cycle of abuse starts with advocacy. Children who experience abuse and neglect are at a higher risk of struggling with mental health challenges, homelessness, and even continuing the cycle in adulthood. But with the right support, they can heal, grow, and thrive. At CASA of Berks County, we believe that one caring adult can make a world of difference in a child’s life. A CASA volunteer is often that difference. By advocating for their safety, education, and emotional well-being, CASA volunteers help ensure that children don’t just survive the system—they thrive beyond it. Come to one of our information sessions to learn more: April 23rd at 5:30 PM or May 4th at 11:00 AM. Register today. Email [email protected]

What starts as a simple act of showing up can turn into something life-changing.
Kim became a CASA volunteer hoping to make a difference—but what she found were lasting connections, meaningful moments, and a reminder that even the smallest gestures can stay with a child for years.
Her story is a powerful look at what it really means to be there for a child who needs it most. Read more and see how you can make an impact too. https://bit.ly/41etiA4
