Serving the citizens of Wythe County has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I faithfully served as Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue for ten years, from 2012 until 2022. After being elected in 2023, I took office in 2024 and have enjoyed serving as your Commissioner of the Revenue ever since.

I really appreciate our County Administration for the recent acknowledgement for ten years of service and I hope to continue to serve for many years to come.

Wythe County Flag to Be Lowered in Honor of Sam Crockett

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – Wythe County Board of Supervisors Chairman James D. Smith has ordered the Wythe County flag to be lowered to half-staff at the Wythe County Courthouse in honor and memory of Walter Samuel "Sam" Crockett, former Wythe County Treasurer, who died July 30, 2026, at the age of 81.

The Wythe County flag will be flown at half-staff from Wednesday, August 5 through Friday, August 7.

In accordance with the authority vested in the Chairman and in recognition of service by a public-servant, and consistent with the protocol for flag-lowering under the Commonwealth of Virginia (see A Guide to Virginia Protocol and Traditions, 14 on page 48), this order is issued. Please note: this directive applies only to the Wythe County flag; the United States and Virginia flags are unaffected by this order.

My heart was broken to learn of the passing of long time Wythe County Treasurer, Sam Crockett. Sam served our beloved Wythe County as Treasurer for 28 years. He was a true public servant and had such a heart for the people of Wythe County and our community. I looked up to Sam long before I went to work at the Courthouse in 2012 as a Deputy Commissioner. Shortly after Faye Barker hired me, Sam became a mentor and a dear friend.

Sam was a pleasure to work with and always a gentleman. I will always be grateful for his friendship, advice, support, and encouragement. I'm sure our dear friend and his Cheif Deputy, Debbie Repass has organized the most amazing welcome home party. Please join me in praying for Arlene, Annie, B and the entire Crockett family as well as " The Courthouse gang" who loved him so.

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – The Wythe County Cannery will reopen for canning operations on Monday, July 27, after crews successfully installed a new boiler, restoring full service at the community facility just in time for the busy harvest season.

The reopening completes a project approved by the Board of Supervisors earlier this year to replace the cannery’s failed boiler and get operations back up and running ahead of the late summer and fall harvest.

Canning operations were suspended in October 2025 after the previous boiler failed beyond repair, though the facility remained open for meat processing while replacement efforts were underway. In February, the Wythe County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase and installation of a new boiler with support from a $50,000 Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Infrastructure Grant awarded through the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

"The reopening of the Wythe County Cannery is welcome news for the many families, farmers, and community organizations who rely on this valuable resource each year," said James D. Smith, chairman of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors. "We appreciate the partnership at the state and local level that made this project possible and are pleased to restore this important service to our community in time for the harvest season."

The cannery will operate by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call 276-228-3421. If staff are unavailable, callers may leave a voicemail, and calls will be returned as soon as possible.

During July, the cannery will be open:
• Mondays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Wednesdays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

From August through November, operating days will expand to:
• Mondays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Tuesdays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Wednesdays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Fridays: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Appointment times, pickup times, operating days, and hours remain subject to change based on seasonal demand.

"The cannery has been an important part of Wythe County's agricultural heritage for generations," said Dr. Russell Street, Wythe County Public Schools superintendent. "We're excited to welcome the community back and remain committed to ensuring the facility continues serving local families and producers while we evaluate long-term opportunities for its future."
