The Wythe County Democratic Committee mourns the loss of Robert “Bobby” Green IV, a man whose life shaped Wythe County for the better. Bobby believed that democracy only works when all people take responsibility for it, and he lived that belief every day. Whether he was volunteering at countless organizations, registering voters, encouraging neighbors to stay engaged, or standing up for what was right, Bobby never asked for recognition, but just did the work.

His commitment to the Wytheville Training School Cultural Center reflected that same sense of purpose. He understood that preserving our shared history is part of building a better future, and he gave his time and energy to make sure those stories would never be lost. Bobby’s life is a reminder that progress does not come from grand gestures alone. It is built over years by people who show up, care deeply about their neighbors, and believe that their community is worth fighting for. Wythe County is stronger and filled with greater hope because of his life and service.

We extend our deepest condolences to Abby, Stacey, and the entire Green family. His absence will be deeply felt across all civic life. Bobby was a champion for all people and strove his whole life to help continue building that more perfect union. In honor of Bobby’s life and the values he carried, his family encourages donations to the Wytheville Training School Cultural Center. Carrying that work forward is one of the most meaningful ways we can remember him. A visitation will be held on Friday, May 8 from 5-7pm at Barnett Funeral Home and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 2pm at Franklin Street United Methodist Church.

The Training School preserved an interview with Bobby as part of their Keeping History Alive series which can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/n0igdWNenNc?si=VRLXBggAHrGgmlog&t=7257

Wythe County continues outreach with third zoning meeting

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – Wythe County will hold a third community meeting on Monday, May 11, at 6 p.m. at George Wythe High School as part of its ongoing outreach on the draft land use classification ordinance.

This meeting follows two earlier community sessions held in Fort Chiswell and Rural Retreat, where residents had the opportunity to learn about the draft ordinance, ask questions and share feedback. Input from those meetings continues to help inform the county’s approach moving forward.

The draft ordinance is designed to provide a long-term framework for how growth and development are managed across Wythe County while continuing to prioritize private property rights and protect the county’s rural character. Work on the draft has been underway for nearly three years, led by Deputy County Administrator Matt Hankins in coordination with the Planning Commission and guided by state requirements and planning best practices.

Interest in land use planning has grown in recent years, particularly following large-scale solar projects and increased discussion about future industrial development. Virginia law requires that any zoning approach be applied countywide rather than targeting a single use or type of project.

The May 11 meeting will build on previous sessions and will again use an informal, open-house format. Staff will provide a brief overview of the draft before meeting one-on-one with residents to answer questions, hear concerns and gather feedback. Participants may share input during the meeting or submit comments for consideration.

Members of the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission are expected to attend.

Residents are encouraged to review the draft ordinance, preliminary zoning map, GIS tools and frequently asked questions in advance at www.wytheco.org/zoning. Questions and feedback may also be submitted through the website ahead of the meeting to allow staff to prepare responses.

There is no set timeline for potential adoption of the ordinance, and no decisions on next steps have been made at this time.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the meeting beginning at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium. Residents are encouraged to attend, ask questions and remain involved as the county continues to evaluate the draft ordinance.
