At 1:42 PM today, Yachats Rural Fire Protection District was dispatched to a patient who had fallen and suffered a leg injury on the beach in the 100 block of Ocean View Dr. The only nearby path from the road to the beach was uneven and narrow, and presented safety issues for both the patient and emergency personnel when considered as a path of extrication. The patient was not in a condition where the risk of a ground-based extrication outweighed the potential benefit; additionally, the patient was comfortable without movement. YRFPD requested the response of Central Oregon Coast Fire and Rescue, Seal Rock Fire, a ladder truck from Newport Fire, and the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team. Additionally, City of Yachats Public Works was requested to close the surrounding area of Ocean View Dr to ensure access and proper positioning for the ladder truck remained available. At 3:40 PM, the patient had been removed from the beach and was on the road.

YRFPD would like to thank all aforementioned entities for assisting with this incident.

Since 1975, Frankie Petrick has served the southern Lincoln County community under multiple roles, including firefighter, various levels of emergency medical technician certifications, and as the fire chief of Yachats Rural Fire Protection District from 2004 through February 2026. Throughout those years, Frankie has seen countless fundamental transitions in the way the fire service operates, and has overseen YRFPD through many such shifts. We were privileged to attend the May 2nd community celebration of Petrick's decades of dedication to the Yachats community, and surprise her with a special radio broadcast from Willamette Valley Communications Center. We are honored to have worked alongside a local legend, and we wish Chief Petrick a happy retirement!

Last week COCFR joined us for some auto extrication training and TNT hydraulic tool testing. We hope to add a battery powered "combination cutter and spreader" tool and "rescue jacks" to our inventory of rescue equipment.

AIRCRAFT INCIDENT - FEBRUARY 11, 2026

On February 11, 2026, at 1:36 PM, Yachats Rural Fire Protection District was dispatched along with several other agencies to a plane crash at the Wakonda Beach State Airport. Upon arrival, units found a small plane in the trees approximately 40 feet above the ground, with the pilot verbally communicating with subjects on the ground. Due to the complexities involved in extricating a subject from such a situation, the Lincoln County Technical Rescue Team was requested. Crews requested the closure of the airport, and, among other resources, an aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) apparatus from Newport Fire. The pilot, who was the only occupant of the plane, was extricated from the plane and safely brought to the ground at 3:14 PM. Crews started recovering equipment, and some units began leaving the scene at 3:19 PM.
