in 1960, the U.S. Navy achieved an unprecedented milestone in maritime history. The nuclear-powered submarine USS Triton (SSRN-586) completed a grueling 84-day voyage, officially becoming the first submarine to circumnavigate the globe entirely submerged. The crew's incredible endurance was tested, breaking the surface only once to transfer a sick sailor to the cruiser USS Macon (CA-132). For this historic accomplishment, the Triton was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.
