In the early morning of August 11th, 2026, we received a phone call from a lost hiker who needed our Search and Rescue (SAR) assistance.

The hiker was on the south side of Mt. Adams, in the Southwest Chutes. He fell down a 200-foot embankment and was trapped there. He lost most of his hiking gear during the fall.
Our SAR coordinator mobilized a two-man rescue team, and the US Army helicopter picked them up from our office. They flew to the hiker, picked him up, and then all flew back to our office, where he was reunited with his mother.

We are pleased with the outcome, as it could easily have been much worse. Thank you, Search and Rescue, for your excellent training, and thank you to the US Army for the ride. We are fortunate to have you in our community.

A Flock success story.

Using a Flock automatic license plate reader (ALPR) helped us quickly arrest a person for a physical domestic violence assault that resulted in the victim sustaining substantial bodily harm, a felony offense.

The Union Gap Police Department developed probable cause for the felony charge and requested our assistance in locating the suspect. A search of Flock LPR identified the last known location of the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies located the suspect and made an arrest in about 10 minutes.

This case highlights the importance of modern police investigation tools like Flock and ALPRs. They can provide additional leads and information during criminal investigations. ALPR use in public areas will be conducted in a legal and ethical manner while recognizing and protecting constitutional standards of privacy.

Yakima County Sheriff’s Office K9 Anita has received donation of body armor

Yakima County Sheriff’s Office, WA - K9 Anita has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Anita’s vest was sponsored by Slavens Racing of Colorado Springs, CO and embroidered with the sentiment “Gifted by Jeff Slavens and Sue Bruchy”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. We are asking the public to help us identify the person in the photo. He was involved in the vandalism of county property about three days ago in the Gleed area. He appears to be wearing an Adidas long-sleeve shirt as a “mask”.

Missing person from 2005

36-year-old Jesus “Gustavo” Rodriguez from Union Gap was reported missing by his girlfriend in 2005. He went to visit a friend and never returned home. Four days later, his vehicle was found burned on Summitview Extension Rd near an orchard. He would be 57 years old now.

He has family in California and Mexico. They have not heard from or seen Gustavo since 2005. If anyone has information about Gustavo, please call our office at (509)574-2500, Case 13C11155. We hope someone remembers him and can share information. Thank you.

On Saturday night at around 10 pm, law enforcement and firefighters responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Green Valley Road and Snipes Pump Road in the County of Yakima.

Upon arrival, two vehicles were found in the area with major damage. Investigators learned that a 2017 Subaru Legacy was turning eastbound onto Green Valley Road from Snipes Pump Road while a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling westbound on Green Valley Road.

The Subaru had five occupants, three of whom were juveniles who were ejected from the vehicle in the collision. Despite lifesaving efforts by first responders, the three juvenile occupants were pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and front passenger were transported to an area hospital, and the driver has been booked on three counts of vehicular homicide.

One occupant from the Volkswagen was also transported to a nearby hospital. The case remains under investigation, but intoxicants are believed to be a factor in the collision. The deceased's family has been notified.
