On October 21–22, SD Highway Patrol put on a 16-hour Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) training course to help law enforcement officers better recognize and investigate impaired driving which was hosted at the Yankton Police Department.

The training brought together law enforcement officers from several area agencies, including: Freeman PD, Hutchinson Co. Sheriff's Office, Wagner PD, Union Co. Sheriff's Office, Elk Point PD, Viborg PD, Springfield PD, Yankton Co. Sheriff's Office, Yankton PD, and SD Highway Patrol.

🚦 What is ARIDE?
This specialized training teaches officers to observe, identify, articulate, and document signs of impairment caused by drugs, alcohol, or a combination of both.

Throughout the course, officers received training on:
🔹 Recognizing signs and symptoms of drug impairment
🔹 Reviewing Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFSTs)
🔹 Identifying medical conditions that may mimic impairment
🔹 Understanding current drug trends and methods of ingestion
🔹 Properly investigating and documenting drug-impaired driving arrests

Why is this training important?
Impaired driving goes beyond alcohol. By strengthening officers' ability to recognize impairment, ARIDE helps law enforcement work toward reducing impaired driving incidents, serious injury crashes, and fatalities.

This month, the City of Yankton Parks Department updated the landscaping in front of the police department, a much-needed facelift. Additionally, as of 10/20, the City of Yankton Street department installed seven new parking signs to improve parking organization and accessibility.

We greatly appreciate the hard work, craftsmanship, and dedication of our City of Yankton-Municipal Government Parks and Street Department employees in helping enhance the appearance and functionality of our facility!

On Monday (Oct 19), we welcomed students from Beadle Elementary for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Yankton Police Department and Courthouse.

Students explored our evidence and interview rooms, checked out police gear, and even got an up-close look at a drone.

The fun continued in the courtroom, where justice was served to Winifred Sanderson for stealing candy! 🧙‍♀️🍭 Turns out, even witches aren't above the law!

Thanks for visiting us Beadle Elementary! We loved sharing a little of what we do with our future leaders.

The Yankton Police Department is excited to partner with Mount Marty University on Saturday, October 24, as we continue celebrating Faith & Blue!

Faith & Blue is a nationwide initiative that brings law enforcement, faith-based organizations, and community members together to build trust, strengthen relationships, and create safer, more connected communities.

🏈 Join us at 1:00 PM at Crane-Youngworth Field as the Lancers take on Dordt University! Fans are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations to support the Yankton Contact Center.

🖤💙 HONORING DEPUTY KATHERINE FRANK 💙🖤

Today, members of the Yankton Police Department, Yankton County Sheriff’s Office, and Dispatch Office attended the funeral of Minnehaha County Sheriff's Deputy Katherine Frank to honor her life, her service, and her bravery.

As we joined fellow members of the law enforcement community in paying our respects, we were reminded that behind every badge is a person who makes a commitment to serve and protect others. Deputy Frank’s courage and dedication will not be forgotten, and her legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her and the many lives she touched.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Deputy Frank’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.

In times of tragedy, we are reminded that we are more than individual agencies. We are one law enforcement family, united by our commitment to one another and the communities we serve.

We stand together. We honor her sacrifice. We will never forget.

Rest in peace, Deputy Katherine Frank. Your watch is over, but your legacy lives on. 🖤💙
