Devil’s Gulch near Garretson, South Dakota.

According to local lore, Jesse James was being pursued after the failed 1876 Northfield bank robbery when he came upon a deep gorge at Devil’s Gulch.

With the posse closing in, legend says he spurred his horse toward the edge and leaped across the roughly 18–20 foot gap, escaping capture. 🐎

This throwback photo from our book "South Dakota 125" shows settlers gathered around Medicine Rock in 1899. The huge boulder with ancient impressions of footprints anchored the mouth of the Cheyenne River for millions of years. Gettysburg citizens moved it to town before the valley was flooded by the Oahe Dam in the 1950s. You’ll find it today at the Dakota Sunset Museum.
