โจ A question for my network:
For those of you fortunate enough to have had a mentorโwhether in your career, education, entrepreneurship, or personal lifeโwhat is one piece of advice they shared that has stayed with you and continues to guide you today?
Mentorship has the power to shape careers, build confidence, open doors, and help us navigate challenges we never expected. As we support the next generation of students, interns, and young adults, it's worth reflecting on the people who helped us become who we are today.
For much of my adolescence and early adulthood, I navigated life without a mentor. There was no roadmap, no trusted guide helping me navigate difficult decisions, discover my strengths, or recognize my potential. Like many people, I learned through trial and error, hard lessons, and a lot of figuring things out on my own.
While I wouldn't wish some of those struggles on others, they shaped me in an important way. They helped me understand how powerful it can be when someone simply shows up, listens, encourages, and believes in you.
That experience is a big part of why I helped create Blank Space Community Center. At its core, Blank Space is about creating the kind of environment I wish I had when I was youngerโa place where people feel seen, supported, challenged, and inspired. A place where young people can connect with caring adults, explore their interests, build confidence, and discover what's possible for their future.
Later in life, I was fortunate to meet a mentor who invested in me, challenged my thinking, and helped me grow. Their impact reinforced something I had already begun to believe: investing in people creates a ripple effect far beyond what we can see.
Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer someone isn't adviceโit's our time, our encouragement, and our belief in their potential.
What about you? Who helped shape your journey, and what is one lesson they've shared that has stayed with you?
