Call For Repairers!

Yarmouth is gearing up to host a series of Repair Fairs! This is a collaborative, social, and free experience where volunteers - like you - help to fix cherished items and broken objects to give them a second life. At these events, folks bring a variety of items - from knives to knitting projects - and repairers either help to complete repairs on-site or brainstorm potential repair options. We're looking for folks who may be interested in volunteering a few hours of their time to help their neighbors repair items at a future event. Interested?

Herbie’s Legacy Continues In Tennessee

A remarkable connection to Yarmouth’s beloved elm tree, Herbie, continues to grow far beyond Maine. In 2020, Tullahoma, Tennessee Communications Manager and City Arborist Lyle Russell planted a cutting descended from Herbie in the city’s arboretum. Six years later, the tree has grown into a healthy 15-foot-tall American elm.

Inspired by Herbie’s story and Frank Knight’s efforts to protect the tree from Dutch elm disease, Russell recently created a video for a national contest hosted by Stanford University’s Hoover Institution exploring the enduring spirit of American freedom. His entry, The Next Tree Warden, pays tribute to Herbie’s legacy, and the impact it continues to have on urban foresters working to restore elm canopies across the country.

Walking or biking to school, after school activities or to sports practice is a great way to reduce traffic in town, avoid that long school car lane, and encourage healthy activity. The Yarmouth Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee has provided the following tips and resources for safely biking and walking to school.

Safe Biking & Walking Reminders:

• Go in groups. It's easier, safer, and more fun to ride or walk to school in a group. Consider organizing a regular Bike Train with other families in your neighborhood.

• Plan your routes. Stick to sidewalks, quiet streets, and pathways whenever possible, even if it adds a couple of extra minutes. If you’re riding on the sidewalk be sure to yield to people walking.

• Wear a bike helmet. Maine state law requires children 16 and under to wear bike helmets. If you’re older, wearing a helmet is the best way to protect yourself from serious or fatal injury, and to set a good example.

• Be bright, be seen, be heard. By law, bikes must have a front and rear light, and be sure to wear bright colors or reflectors, and have a bike bell.

• Courtesy counts. Be sure to pass with care of beings with two legs or four. Alert other sidewalk or path users and say “passing left” or “biker back” or “excuse me” when passing others, and ride slow as you pass.

• Know your mode. E-motos are not e-bikes and many e-vehicles are not legal for kids to ride or even on public streets. Know the rules of the road for your mode.

• Do not ride distracted. Using your phone or Smartwatch while riding a bike makes the streets less safe for everyone. The call or text can wait. Riding with headphones on can reduce your ability to hear and react to other activities around you.
