Letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns the country did their best to help "Stamp Out Hunger!" on May 12, and folks stepped up to make it a record year. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers, NWA raked in more than 56,000 pounds of food!

That's 28 tons!! And more than 3500 pounds of it was delivered to the Yarmouth Community Food Pantry. Special thanks to our local carriers and the postal customers who participated in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive – the largest one-day food drive in the nation and probably the world. You certainly delivered for us!

Letter Carriers help 'Stamp Out Hunger'

The 20th anniversary 2012 National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 12. Each year, the second Saturday in May is a day when we all have an opportunity, with the help of our letter carrier, to easily donate food to needy families in our community. Just fill a bag with non-perishable food and put on or near your mailbox. The terrific men and women of the USPS will do the rest.

The drive, the largest one-day food-collection event in the nation, has been a success every year, but the needs are particularly sad, even staggering. Sixteen percent of all Americans are at risk of hunger—uncertain where their next meal may be coming from. That includes 1 in 5 children under the age of 18, plus 4 million seniors who are forced every day to choose between paying a utility bill and buying food.

Celebrate Spring by Helping to End Hunger

Spring is associated with renewal, warmth, growth, and light, but for some in our community spring is just another season to spend worrying about providing enough food for their families. The Yarmouth Community Food Pantry is currently in need of the following items to help meet the steady increase in requests for food assistance:

Canned Beef Stew
Canned Fruit - peaches, pears, pineapple, mixed fruit
Cold cereal - all varieties
Canned pasta: Raviolio, Beefaroni, spaghetti & meatballs, etc.
Spaghetti Sauce
Cooking oil
Coffee
Toilet paper

The Food Pantry provides supplemental food assistance to those living in the greater Yarmouth community. The Pantry is located in the lower level of First Parish Church, 116 Main Street in Yarmouth.
Donations can be dropped off at First Parish Church during office hours (Mon – Fri, 9am-3pm) and during regular Pantry hours on Tuesday and Friday from 10-12:AM and on Wednesday from 5-7:PM. All donations of non-perishable food are welcome.

Yarmouth Community Pantry is Beneficiary of Girl Scout Troop 214 Food Drive
Scouts from Yarmouth Troop 214 help weigh, presort and shelve some of the more than 700 pounds of food they collected for the Yarmouth Community Food Pantry as part of the Troop’s community service project.

The girls not only collected, sorted and shelved the food at the Pantry, they also put away the tables and crates that had been set up for them and swept the floor when they were done.

YCFP Benefits from Yarmouth High School Spirit Week in a BIG way

Spirit Week is an annual YHS event designed to build school spirit and class pride. Classes strive to 'win' by getting the most points overall through a variety of events and competitions. Everything is planned and run by the students, with support and guidance from the adults here. There is usually a charity component in Spirit Week.

This year the YCFP was the beneficiary of that charity component, when the Senior class officers decided to stick close to home, donating food and money to the Pantry.

Casco Bay Ford Food and Drive
Casco Bay Ford again held a food drive during the month of December for the Yarmouth Community Food Pantry as an incentive to come test drive a new car. Prospective buyers donated canned goods and test drove a car, and in return got a gift card for Dunkin Donuts along with the opportunity to drive a great car. And the Pantry got a wagon load of food on December 30, just in time to replenish its shelves after the holidays. The promotion was coordinated by Gretchen Sigler of Casco Bay Ford.
