Yarmouth Water District Ths is the official Yarmouth Water District page. We are located in Yarmouth, Maine and serve the communities of Yarmouth and North Yarmouth.

Starting this Monday, Yarmouth Water District will be using an automated phone call system as part of our new billing platform.

Phone calls are one of several ways we notify customers with overdue balances, and on average we make 70-100+ of these calls each month.

If your account has an overdue balance, you may receive an automated call that will include your account number, your balance due, and instructions on how to reach us to make a payment.

We attempt to contact customers multiple times before any service interruption occurs, so please don’t be alarmed if you receive a call. If you have questions about your account or need to make payment arrangements, give us a call. We’re always happy to help.

Did you know that a drinking water aquifer can be contaminated not by a major industrial spill, but by the slow, quiet accumulation of everyday small petroleum releases over time? A little gasoline here, a drip of oil there, and sandy soil that moves it all quickly underground.

A landmark USGS study right here in Maine documented exactly that in North Windham, and the outcome was the loss of an entire community's groundwater supply.

We put together a short read on what happened, why it matters, and what each of us can do in our own driveways and garages to protect the water our neighbors and our kids depend on every day.

Edit 9:00pm We are happy to report that repairs to the water main on Anderson Ave have been completed. Service has been restored and no further interruptions are expected.

The nature of this repair was such that service disruptions should have been minimal for affected customers. However, if you are experiencing any issues with your water service, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly.

Thank you for your patience and understanding!

Yarmouth Water District crews are currently on site investigating a water main break. Customers on Anderson Street between West Main Street and Deacon Street may be impacted.

During repairs, affected customers could experience lower water pressure and discolored water. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working to resolve this as quickly as possible.

We will provide updates as more information becomes available. Thank you for your patience!

You may have seen recent news about the federal government rolling back PFAS drinking water regulations. We want our customers to know what this means for your water.

The short answer: it changes nothing for Yarmouth Water District customers.

Maine passed its own PFAS drinking water law in June 2025 (LD 1326, Maine Public Law Chapter 425) that specifically locked in the stricter April 2024 federal standards and cannot be overridden by federal regulatory changes. Changing Maine's standard would require the Maine Legislature to pass new legislation.

Our most recent compliance testing shows both of our wells with PFAS detections currently meet Maine's existing standard. We are actively working toward the new stricter limits that take effect in 2029, with an engineering study underway and significant state and federal funding secured.

For the full details including a complete breakdown of the regulations and our test results, visit our website link below. I also added an image of our four page memo to the first comment.

We’ve got some good news to share! The Yarmouth Water District recently received the Excellence in Operations Award from the Maine Water Utilities Association.

We don’t usually stop to pat ourselves on the back (there’s usually a water main, pump, or spreadsheet waiting), but this award recognizes the kind of behind-the-scenes work our team does every day, maintaining infrastructure, protecting our groundwater, meeting strict water quality standards, improving customer systems, investing in long-term planning, and making sure safe drinking water is there whenever you turn on the tap.

Over the past few years, that’s included replacing aging water mains, expanding our wellhead protection efforts, upgrading our billing system, investing in a District-owned solar array to stabilize power costs, strengthening capital reserves, and working with local partners on groundwater protection and public education.

The real reason for this recognition is our people. We’re a small team, but an incredibly dedicated one, and they take a lot of pride in the work they do. We’re also fortunate to have a very experienced and supportive Board of Trustees helping guide the District.

So while we’ll be back to our normal routine of fixing things before most people notice they need fixing, and sometimes jumping into action when a pipe springs a leak, we did want to pause for a moment to say thank you to our staff, our trustees, and our customers. We’re proud of this recognition and proud to serve this community.

3/3/26 11:40 AM Update. Water is back in service!

We will be performing necessary repairs at the intersection of Walnut Hill Road and Pea Lane in North Yarmouth on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

While the work will take place at the intersection, water service will be interrupted from approximately 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM for customers in the surrounding area (see attached map for the service impact area).

Our operators will be in the area this afternoon hand-delivering notices to customers who will be impacted.

Traffic will be affected at the intersection during construction, and we might close the Walnut Hill end of Pea Lane down to help control traffic. Please drive through the area slowly and use caution, our crew will be working in the roadway.

If you have any questions, please give us a call at 207-846-5821.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while we complete this work.

Due to the Blizzard Warning and tomorrow’s forecast of snow and wind that even Mainers might complain about, the Yarmouth Water District office will be closed on Monday, February 23, 2026.

We plan to reopen at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, assuming we can find the building under the snow drifts.

I made an attempt to contact all scheduled appointments for Monday to reschedule. The only exception is the 8:00 AM appointment, as we did not have a phone number on file. We will give everyone a call on Tuesday to get appointments rescheduled.

As always, we have an operator on call 24/7 for true water emergencies at 207-846-5821.

Stay safe, stay warm, and maybe let someone else shovel for once.
