This program seeks to educate students in the larger community about the importance of wilderness and nature. With a focus on environmental thinking, writing, conservation, and wilderness travel, the program is intended to create opportunities for NYA students, high school students across Maine, and the larger community to acknowledge the importance of wilderness conservation and environmental iss

The Kauffmann Program is aligned with NYA’s mission to develop a “concern for the larger community and appreciation for the natural environment.” The program seeks to preserve and extend the legacy of former NYA trustee John M. Kauffmann, a neighbor and friend of NYA who had a lifelong passion for public lands and wilderness conservation.

As we move to the end of the semester, my class has had visits this week from two powerful, inspiring young women who have showed my students how it is possible to live an exciting, purpose-driven life.

talked about what it means to be a student in the 21st century, and international trail running guide/yoga teacher talked about how to build a non-traditional life of passion and curiosity.

Cool to see how their ideas -from morning routines to mindset-reinforce so much of what we’ve been learning all semester and widen the students’ sense of what is possible. Next week we finish up with saunas and float tanks!

A few soaked boots from stream crossings, lots of hot cocoa, cheese, cookies, card games, and oatmeal. Even more goofiness and adventure. Already planning the next trip.
