It is with a heavy heart that the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Richard Mayer, who passed away peacefully at his home on April 29, 2026.
Richard’s service is long and inspiring. Born in 1944, he joined the Sheriff’s Office in January 1966. He then quickly became a steady, familiar presence as a deputy in Yarnell. He exemplified what it meant to be a deputy who was truly involved with the community. After his retirement in August 2001, Richard continued to serve Yavapai County as a reserve deputy. Whether in uniform or as a private citizen, Richard was a man who showed up for his neighbors.
He passed away in Yarnell—the same community he called home, protected and served for over half a century. He was a mentor, a protector, and a friend to many.
Thank you, former Deputy Mayer, for your incredible life and service. We have the watch from here.
"Richard epitomized the meaning of community policing. He was such an important part of the careers of so many long-time employees, including myself as one of my first field-training deputies. His contribution to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office cannot be overstated. He will forever be part of our legacy. Our thoughts are with the Mayer family during this difficult time." - Sheriff David RhodesI

He is survived by his sister Charlotte Newton, and will be cremated and buried at the family plot in Walnut Grove, Kirkland, AZ at a date to be announced.
