Teenagers who commit crimes with guns will now automatically be charged as adults under a new Mississippi law set to take effect July 1.

The law means juveniles will bypass youth court and head straight to circuit court. Lawmakers agree youth gun violence is a serious problem, but disagree over whether this is the right approach.

The Yazoo Police Department extends its sincerest condolences to the families impacted by the tragic event that occurred yesterday afternoon. Several individuals were promptly identified and the Yazoo County Sheriff's Office successfully located them outside the city limits. Great appreciation is expressed for the swift and professional assistance in taking them into custody.

On February 1st, 2026, at approximately 8:30 pm, an officer with the Yazoo City Police Department initiated a traffic stop in the vicinity of East 13th Street. Upon stopping, one individual exited the vehicle and fled on foot, carrying what appeared to be an AK-style rifle. The officer remained with the vehicle and secured the two remaining occupants. A search of the vehicle yielded a firearm with an altered serial number, later confirmed to be a reported stolen item. All occupants were taken into custody, and the individual who fled was subsequently identified.

The City of Yazoo convened its regularly scheduled board meeting on December 22nd, 2025. During the proceedings, Interim Chief P. Jaco presented several employment applications for consideration. Upon adjournment, the city approved the hiring of two certified officers and three recruits. The police department and the city encourage interested individuals to submit their applications.

Alert Yazoo...Evacuation order for Renshaw and Generette Road in Yazoo has been lifted Air Monitors have deemed the area safe to return home Also Shelter in place orders have been lifted

The shelter in place order for residents of Yazoo City has been lifted. Air monitoring has been completed and deemed the air safe. Again, this is for residents of Yazoo City.
Air monitoring for Renshaw and Generette area is still underway.

At present, Emergency Management is recommending that everyone seek shelter in place. Currently, there is no evacuation order in effect.
