🫁 Prevent Choking Emergencies 🫁

Tip of the Day from the DCHD!

Choking can happen quickly, especially in young children and older adults. Taking simple precautions can help keep everyone safe during meals and snack time.

βœ”οΈ Cut food into small pieces
βœ”οΈ Encourage children to sit while eating
βœ”οΈ Chew food slowly and completely
βœ”οΈ Keep small objects away from young children
βœ”οΈ Avoid talking or laughing with food in your mouth

🚨 Learn the signs of choking:
β€’ Difficulty speaking
β€’ Clutching the throat
β€’ Trouble breathing
β€’ Silent coughing or wheezing

Knowing CPR and the Heimlich maneuver can help save a life in an emergency.

🏊 Drowning Prevention β˜€οΈ

Tip of the Day from the DCHD!

As summer approaches, water safety is more important than ever. Drowning can happen quickly and quietly, but many incidents are preventable.

πŸ’§ Always supervise children near water, even for a moment
πŸ›Ÿ Use life jackets when boating or around open water
πŸ“± Put phones and distractions away while watching swimmers
🏊 Enroll children in swim lessons when appropriate
🚫 Never swim alone

Remember: β€œFloaties” and inflatable toys are not substitutes for supervision or life jackets.

Stay safe and enjoy the water responsibly this season!

πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ MOVE MORE, FEEL BETTER! πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’™

Tip of the Day from the DCHD!

Getting active doesn’t have to mean spending hours at the gym. Small steps every day can make a BIG difference for your health!

Regular physical activity can help:
βœ… Manage blood sugar
βœ… Improve heart health
βœ… Boost mood and energy
βœ… Lower blood pressure
βœ… Help you sleep better

Start small:
🚢 Take a 10-minute walk after dinner
πŸͺœ Use the stairs instead of the elevator
πŸ’ƒ Dance to your favorite music at home
πŸ• Walk the dog or play outside with your kids

The goal is at least 150 minutes of moderate activity each week and every step counts!

πŸ’‘ Tip: Pick activities you actually enjoy so it’s easier to stick with them.

Before starting a new exercise routine, talk with your healthcare provider about what activities are best for you.

🩺 Know Your Numbers. Protect Your Heart. ❀️

Tip of the Day from the DCHD!

High blood pressure often has no symptoms, which is why it’s important to understand what your blood pressure numbers mean and talk openly with your healthcare provider.

At your next appointment, consider asking your doctor:

βœ”οΈ What do my blood pressure numbers mean?
βœ”οΈ Is my blood pressure in a healthy range?
βœ”οΈ How often should I check my blood pressure?
βœ”οΈ What lifestyle changes can help lower my blood pressure?
βœ”οΈ Do I need medication or additional testing?
βœ”οΈ What warning signs should I watch for?

πŸ“Š Understanding your numbers:
β€’ Normal: Less than 120/80
β€’ Elevated: 120–129 / less than 80
β€’ High Blood Pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 / 80–89
β€’ High Blood Pressure (Stage 2): 140+ / 90+

Small changes can make a big difference for your heart health. Eating healthy foods, staying active, reducing stress, and checking your blood pressure regularly can help lower your risk for heart disease and stroke.

πŸ“Take charge of your health by knowing your numbers and having the conversation with your doctor.

🦟 All this rain can mean more mosquitoes around your home.

Tip of the Day from the DCHD!

Mosquitoes only need a small amount of standing water to lay eggs and many common backyard items can collect enough water for them to breed. After heavy rain, take a few minutes to check your yard and help reduce mosquito activity around your home.

βœ… Empty buckets, flowerpot saucers, toys, and bird baths
βœ… Clear clogged gutters
βœ… Change pet water often
βœ… Cover boats, trash bins, and outdoor containers
βœ… Remove standing water from tarps, tires, and low spots in the yard

Protect yourself and your family by using U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent and wearing long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are most active, especially at dawn and dusk.

Stay healthy, Delco! πŸŒ§οΈβ˜€οΈ

🚨 NEW Colorectal Cancer Screening Options Are Here 🚨

Getting screened for colorectal cancer just got easier.

The American Cancer Society's updated guidelines now expand screening options beyond colonoscopies and traditional stool-based tests, giving people more choices to get screened in a way that works for them.

βœ… Screening still starts at age 45 for adults at average risk
βœ… Colonoscopies remain the gold standard
βœ… New options now include:
β€’ At-home stool tests
β€’ Newly approved stool DNA/RNA tests
β€’ Blood-based screening tests available through your healthcare provider

Why does this matter?
Because colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when found early and more screening options can help more people get tested.

πŸ“Š Colorectal cancer is increasing in younger adults, with 1 in 5 new cases now occurring in people under 55.
Talk with your healthcare provider about which screening option is right for you.

⚠️ Important: If you are experiencing symptoms like blood in your stool, ongoing abdominal pain, or changes in bowel habits, talk to a healthcare provider right away. Screening tests are for people without symptoms.

As we wind down May (Asthma & Allergy Awareness Month) ....

Do you know the difference between a rescue inhaler and a controller inhaler?

Inhalers help deliver medicine directly into the lungs to make breathing easier for people with asthma and other respiratory conditions, but different inhalers serve different purposes.

🫁 Rescue Inhalers
Used during asthma attacks or sudden breathing problems to provide quick relief.

🫁 Controller Inhalers
Used every day to help reduce airway swelling and prevent asthma symptoms before they start.

Using the right inhaler the right way is an important part of managing asthma safely. If you have questions about your medications or asthma symptoms, talk with your healthcare provider.
