BREAKING: A 20-year-old Haitian immigrant from Springfield, Ohio took his life after the Trump administration revoked his Temporary Protected Status (TPS), according to his family.
Pierre Damas Bel, a Haitian immigrant, lost his TPS protections after the Supreme Court upheld the Trump administration’s campaign to revoke deportation protections for immigrants from certain countries.
In losing his TPS, Pierre was ordered to wear an ankle monitor and faced severe travel restrictions.
According to his father, Bel graduated from high school last May with honors as a proud member of the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC).
When his fellow JROTC members received uniforms resembling those of the U.S. Armed Forces, Bel did not receive one. He believed it was because of his monitor.
“I’m walking with a GPS monitor on my leg, carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation I never imagined I would experience,” Pierre wrote before his death.
Days later, Bel walked into traffic on the interstate and was killed.
This is what Trump and ICE are doing to our communities.
Rest in peace, Pierre Damas Bel.
