Towards the back of the property, a canal runs beside the Piazza, and eventually leads into the Combahee River. Auldbrass is one of the only plantations in South Carolina to have a functioning gate into the river. .
In the 1700’s, it was discovered that rice could be grown on the Combahee River marshes by using the tidal flow of fresh water to flood the rice fields. .
We recently had our content provider traverse through the rice cultivation canal and into the Combahee River to collect some shots of how this historical spot has changed throughout the years. .
