Every good briefing starts with the enemy situation. James Talarico is up 47โ40 in the latest poll. He's raised $72 million to Ken Paxton's $17 million โ 4-to-1. Karl Rove says "time is running out." And John Cornyn โ who lost the primary to Paxton โ told the Texas Tribune he won't lift a finger, calling the Republican nominee "lazy."
Read that again. A sitting Republican senator, in the race that decides Senate control, sitting on his hands because Texas voters chose someone else. Democrats haven't won statewide in Texas since 1994, and Cornyn would rather hand them one than admit he lost. That's not principle. That's a grudge with a Senate seat attached.
Now the friendly forces โ and today they moved. President Trump, from the White House this afternoon: his political operation has "around a billion dollars," he'll spend up to $500 MILLION of it on the midterms, and he controls where it goes. And the assignments are out: Elon Musk's America PAC takes Texas for Paxton, while MAGA Inc. takes North Carolina. Musk isn't waiting โ America PAC has $100 million authorized for the midterms, and its first FEC filings show Texas as its number-one target in the country. Thune says Texas ads cost $8 million a week across 20 media markets. The richest man on earth just got handed that bill, and he's paid bigger ones.
And the Texas PACs are already firing: Lone Star Liberty launched a $15 million ad blitz across 18 markets Tuesday on top of $10 million already spent, and Ted Cruz's Truth and Courage PAC is in. Talarico's PAC, by comparison, is running on $8.6 million โ including $3.75 million in dark money from the Sixteen Thirty Fund, for a man campaigning against billionaires.
Paxton's record answers "corrupt" better than any ad: over $1 billion in Medicaid fraud recovered, 120+ healthcare fraudsters arrested, H-1B fraud investigations across North Texas, $6.8 million in debt wiped for disabled veterans scammed by a fake VA outfit. Talarico is a progressive who dodges the socialist label while running on its platform. Texas has seen this movie โ Beto had the money and the media in 2018, and lost.
To the Republicans still nursing primary wounds: the President just went all in. The primary is over. Cornyn can sulk; the rest of us get on the field.
Half a billion dollars and Musk's machine โ is that enough to hold Texas, or does it still come down to you showing up in November?
