The Fire Prevention office and were able to partner up for their book bag giveaway event where each book bag received our brand new fire safety activity booklets and YFD pencils among other materials from various other donors. We also had the opportunity to have a read along with all that attended with our new booklets. Thank you to the entire Riverfront branch staff for hosting the event and letting be a part of it.

Hello this is the Yonkers Fire Dept. with a public service announcement:

On Monday, September 18th The Yonkers Fire Department began the annual fire hydrant inspection program. The program is expected to run for 6 to 8 weeks. The inspections are required to ensure proper fire protection. You may experience cloudy or discolored water and fluctuations in water pressure. If cloudy or discolored water occurs, please run the cold water until the water runs clear. The discoloration represents no health hazard. Nevertheless, it is recommended that you check the water before using it for things such as cooking, drinking, and washing clothes. If any problems persist, or you have questions regarding water quality, please contact the Water Treatment Plant at 914 377-6765 or the 24 hour Mayor’s Help Line at (914) 377-4357. 🧯Great fire extinguisher training with the staff over at Thank you for having fire prevention over to talk about different types of fire extinguishers, the P.A.S.S. method and putting it all together at the end by using fire extinguishers on some real 🔥. Know that fire extinguishers are for small fires ONLY. If you don’t feel comfortable using a fire extinguisher, please evacuate the area in the event of a fire, if indoors shut the door behind you and call 911 🚒 immediately. Fire prevention and station 8 made it to the today and had the opportunity to teach toddlers about 1.) Dialing 911 in case of an emergency 🚒🚑🚓 2.) Knowing stop, drop & roll and why it’s important 🔥 3.) Not being frighten of firefighters when all of our gear is on. All children passed with flying colors 🌈 All followed by a tour of Engine 308 🚒 Thank you to the entire staff for being welcoming hosts 🙌🏽 #911

Great day of partnership between and to be able to bring to the residents of a fire safety seminar lead by the Fire Prevention Bureau. The importance of knowing two ways out your home, checking your smoke alarms, staying low in smokey conditions were explained among other facts. Volunteers demonstrated stop, drop & roll and some even tried on some firefighter gear to get a glimpse of how physically taxing being a firefighter can be. All followed by a Q & A to give residents peace of mind. Thank you to the Crestwood library branch staff for being excellent hosts.

🚤 Boating season is here and Yonkers’ only boat ramp at JFK Marina is open for business & leisure. Fire safety extends to motorize boat life. In addition to these facts here please remember to also… 1) Make sure you always have your U.S. Coast Guard, marine-type fire extinguisher onboard and full🧯. 2) Store your boat flares in a cool, dry location and away from any area where it could be exposed to any sparks, flames & excessive heat (under 168 degrees F)🥵. 3) Address any known electrical issues before your next launch to avoid potential fire hazards on the water 🔌💥. Great day of collaboration with & We had to opportunity in speaking with seniors about home fire safety along with smoke alarm distribution. Fire Prevention provided combo smoke/CO alarms for common space areas while provided smoke detectors for bedrooms along with providing installation assistance. Has everyone checked their smoke alarms this month?

This past Wednesday evening, Yonkers Fire Prevention had the privilege of speaking (english & spanish) to residents of Nodine Hill at the Dayspring Community Center about fire safety, our continuing free smoke alarm program & helping with food services for those who attended. This will be the first of many events coming to Dayspring in a ever growing partnership with the Fire Prevention office. Thank you to the entire staff at Dayspring for hosting the community and the YFD.
