Beverly E Smith Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden Maintained by the Hudson River Audubon Society, the Beverly E. Smith Butterfly and Hummingbird garden The Butterfly Garden was created by Beverly E. Smith.

Home to dozens of species, the garden restores lost habitat and through planning provides food and shelter throughout the entire butterfly life cycle. Hummingbirds are also frequent visitors, including a rare Rufous Hummingbird! Come and volunteer with us! You'll have the opportunity to learn with our brilliant master gardener. Our group of volunteers are friendly, fun and come from all levels of gardening experience as well as all walks of life.

Meet at the Nature Center 10 AM. 19 Dudley Street, Yonkers.
We will walk to the Beverly Smith Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden and search for caterpillars and butterflies. Learn about their life cycle and other interesting facts.

3 or 4 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in the garden today along with Silver-spotted Skipper, Zabulon Skipper, Summer Azure, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail and Cabbage White. The bird baths were quite active. Bathing birds included Northern Flicker, Black-capped Chickadee, American Robin, Song Sparrow. Black-and-white Warbler and Gray Catbird. American Goldfinch feeding on flowers.

Sunday, August 16 Field Trip - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge
Meet at 8:00 AM. 150-19 Cross Bay Blvd.
Wear foot wear that can get muddy and wet. (Conditions on the Esat Pond remain very wet. Waterproof boots recomended!)
We will walk the edge of the East Pond for shorebirds. Arrive early as this is the same day a the Shorebird Festival.

Hummingbirds can be seen at anytime of the day. They may take a siesta during the day. One of the best times to see them at feeders is the last couple of hours of daylight, where they feed up for the night. Like this female at the Butterfly garden this evening. Best is to sit quietly in the garden and wait for them to visit.

Southern Meadow/Zone, corner of Middletown Road and Stadium Road. Or use 3282 Middletown Road, Bronx as a guide to the entrance to the parking lot.
Late migrants such as Mourning Warbler, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, and Olive-sided Flycatcher, might be seen, along with female warblers and others.
