Healthcare workers are risking their lives to care for Ebola patients.

Without proper protective equipment, every shift can mean exposure to a deadly disease.

As the Ebola outbreak grows in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, doctors, nurses, and frontline responders urgently need support.

On June 23rd, join Danielle Butin, Founder & CEO of Afya, for a live update on the outbreak, what's happening on the ground, and how we can help protect the people risking everything to care for others.

After 14 years of extraordinary leadership, friendship, and service, Beth Stevens is transitioning from Chair of Afya's Board of Directors to the role of Emerita Board Member.

There are people who join an organization, and then there are people who help build it. Beth has been part of Afya's journey almost from the beginning. For more than 14 years, she has shared her wisdom, perspective, and unwavering support, helping shape both the organization and the community we have become. From planning sessions that sparked big ideas to travels that deepened our understanding of the work, Beth has been a constant source of encouragement, insight, and friendship.

Over the years, Beth's partnership has taken her from boardrooms to communities in Haiti, Puerto Rico, South Africa, and Tanzania, always bringing wisdom, curiosity, and a commitment to making healthcare more accessible for those who need it.

While her role is evolving, her impact on Afya is lasting. We are grateful that she will continue to be part of the Afya family as an Emerita Board Member.

Thank you, Beth for your leadership, compassion, and belief in all that is possible.

Asante Sana, Beth 🧡

"We only have what we give." — Isabel Allende

In Afya's work, the lists we receive from recipients on the ground tell a story unto themselves. The healthcare workers writing them are facing the impossible, and what they ask for reveals everything.

I've felt this before. At the start of the war in Ukraine, surgeons in Kyiv were requesting amputation kits, chest seals for open chest wounds, and chemical respirators.

That feeling is back.

We've begun receiving requests from Uganda and the DRC. Alongside PPE of every kind, there are requests for many body bags. because Ebola is contagious post-mortem. Every time I see body bags on a request list, my mind races to what can prevent them. And here, PPE may be one of the most powerful interventions available to protect healthcare workers doing their best with severely limited resources.

Photographs are circulating of local workers with little more than single play dust masks covering their faces. That is as good as it gets for people on the ground right now. We have to do better. We are all one.

Afya is working closely with hospitals across New York to collect as much surplus PPE as possible and get it into the hands of these healthcare workers as quickly as we can. Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. has generously and swiftly stepped forward as our lead funder on this effort.

Join us. Connect us to more PPE. Fund this effort.

Remember: every photo you see of an under protected healthcare worker isn't just a snapshot, it's a warning. One less healthcare worker means one fewer person able to treat patients, and that loss ripples across generations.

Afya has responded to Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone. We can help here again.

We all can.

Earlier this May, Afya was honored to host a dozen volunteers from Express across NY, NJ, and CT for full-day immersive experiences at our warehouse. It was the beginning of an exciting new mission-aligned volunteer collaboration.

Throughout the day, DHL Express employees learned about Afya’s work advancing global health and sustainability while sharing their own expertise in logistics, marketing, HR, and other areas.

Four DHL Express employees participated in a memorable Job Panel with our neurodivergent volunteers.

They shared their professional journeys, offered interview advice, and answered questions about workplace experiences and career growth.

As one volunteer reflected:
“It was inspiring to see how Afya creates impact not only through global health support, but also by building an environment where service, inclusion, education, and accessibility come together so naturally.”

We are deeply grateful to the DHL Express team for spending the day with us and helping strengthen this growing partnership. We look forward to welcoming them back again soon.

We look forward to doing much more together.

From overcoming a traumatic brain injury at age 10 to becoming a Paralympic silver medalist, Ryan Boyle’s story is one of resilience, determination, and purpose.

Ryan recently found Afya through Manhattanville University and quickly became a valued part of our volunteer community. His energy, compassion, and commitment to helping others have already made a lasting impact.

After surviving a life-changing accident in 2003, Ryan had to relearn how to breathe, speak, walk, and live independently. Today, he is a 1-time Paralympian, Paralympic silver medalist, multi-time World Championship medalist, author, and motivational speaker who continues to inspire people around the world through his advocacy and perseverance.

We are so grateful Ryan chose to spend part of his journey with Afya. Thank you, Ryan, for showing us the power of resilience and service in action. đź’™

This week, the WHO declared an Ebola outbreak in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the situation is worsening.

More than 500 suspected cases and 130 deaths have already been reported. Healthcare workers are on the frontlines fighting to contain it, many without adequate protection.

For this strain of Ebola, there is no approved vaccine and no proven treatment. Right now, PPE saves lives.

Afya is mobilizing emergency shipments of masks, gowns, gloves, face shields, and other protective equipment to vetted on-the-ground partners responding to the outbreak.

When healthcare workers are protected, clinics stay open, communities continue receiving care, and outbreaks are more likely to be contained. We need your help.
