Independent living is about more than where you live. It’s about having opportunities to get out, participate in your community, make connections, and enjoy the experiences life has to offer.

WDOM recently enjoyed a night out at the Westchester Soccer Club game — cheering from the stands, enjoying the action and being part of our local community.

Through our Live Independently – Live Well initiative, WDOM wants to create more opportunities for people with disabilities to get out into the community, support local organizations and businesses, be visible and, most importantly, have fun.
Because living independently means being able to participate fully in the community around you.

With new Medicaid requirements starting January 1, Westchester Disabled on the Move wants to make sure that those receiving Medicaid and SNAP do not lose their benefits.

WDOM announces with deep sadness the passing of Mel Tanzman, former Executive Director and a widely respected leader in the disability rights community. Mel dedicated more than 20 years of service to WDOM, guiding the organization with integrity, commitment, and an unwavering belief in equity and inclusion. His advocacy and leadership strengthened disability rights in our community and left a lasting impact.

WDOM honors his legacy with profound appreciation and respect. We extend our sincere condolences to his family, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him throughout his distinguished career.

People with disabilities are not punchlines.

Westchester Disabled on the Move stands with the New York Association on Independent Living (NYAIL) in condemning the use of derogatory language that targets people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Words matter, and using harmful slurs for entertainment or attention reinforces stigma and discrimination.

Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

We were proud to bring together advocates, community partners, and elected officials for an afternoon of connection, important policy updates, and celebration. Guests also enjoyed an adaptive hiking demonstration by the Westchester Parks Foundation, music, games, and refreshments.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our annual WDOM community gathering! 💙

We were honored to bring together advocates, community partners, and elected officials to celebrate our work and discuss important policy changes that will impact people with disabilities, including upcoming Medicaid enrollment requirements taking effect in 2027.

We also enjoyed an adaptive hiking demonstration by Westchester Parks Foundation, along with games, music by DJ Rhythem, and refreshments generously provided by DeCicco's & Sons Markets and Bona Bona Ice Cream.

Together, we remain committed to empowering, informing, and advocating for the disability community throughout Westchester County. Thank you for standing with us!

Tell The Governor To Sign NonProfit Contracting Reform Bill

State Legislators and nonprofits gathered at a press conference in Elmsford organized by Nonprofit Westchester to call on the Governor to sign legislation to fix the nonprofit payment system.

Like hundreds of nonprofits across the state, Westchester Disabled On the Move (WDOM) must continue to provide essential services, pay employees, cover rent, and meet every obligation—even when the State fails to pay on time. We cannot put the disability community on hold because Albany’s contracting system is broken.

This crucial concern has the full support of our local legislators, including Senator Shelley Mayer and Assemblymembers Amy Paulin and Dana Levenger. At the forefront of this advocacy was NPW’s Jan Fisher, leading her large membership of Westchester nonprofits.

The Legislature passed two bipartisan bills at the close of the legislative session to reform the nonprofit contracting process: S.9761 (Mayer) / A.10741 (Paulin) and S.9855 (Mayer) / A.11179 (Paulin).

Governor Hochul must sign both bills without delay. New York’s nonprofits deserve better—and so do the communities we serve.
