Rebuild Yonkers Schools

Rebuild Yonkers Schools Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, the Yonkers City Council and the Yonkers Board of Education are proposing a new initiative to Rebuild Yonkers Schools.

Yonkers Schools are old. Their average age is 75 and their deterioration has resulted in a need of $2 billion in renovations, far more than what Yonkers taxpayers are able to afford to repair on their own. Yonkers schools are overcrowded. They’re currently 4,100 students over capacity and the problem is getting worse. Basements have been converted into classrooms. Most schools don’t have libraries

or playing fields. New York State has already rebuilt other city school districts. The State has rebuilt every school in Buffalo and they’re rebuilding schools in Rochester and Syracuse too, even as those districts shrink while Yonkers continues to grow. It’s time to Rebuild Yonkers Schools. Mayor Mike Spano, the Yonkers City Council and the Yonkers Board of Education are proposing a new initiative to Rebuild Yonkers Schools. We’re asking the State for a partnership that’s consistent with the successful reconstruction programs in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse.

***NEWS RELEASE***: CITY OF YONKERS BREAKS GROUND ON JUSTICE SONIA SOTOMAYOR COMMUNITY SCHOOL

YONKERS, NY – March 25, 2022 – Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, Yonkers Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin M. Quezada along with local and state officials today officially broke ground on the Yonkers Public School District’s new Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School. To be dedicated to Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor, the new school located at 73 Lawrence Street, will serve 675 students from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade and the local community. The Justice School is the first of three new schools to be constructed by the City of Yonkers in its efforts to rebuild the aging infrastructure of the Yonkers Public Schools.

Designed as a community school, the Justice School will feature multi-functional spaces that will be accessible evenings and weekends without the need to open the entire school building. Special amenities include a multi-purpose gymnasium and meeting room with stage; a full-sized basketball court and locker rooms; a cafeteria and meeting room with full kitchen; and a health suite with space for two exam rooms and a dental exam room.

💬“The Justice School is the first of its kind in our District and will be a model moving forward as we continue to rebuild our schools,” said Mayor Spano. “Our local schools are the heart of our neighborhoods and should be made accessible not only for educational enrichment, but also for the benefit of the families who live in the area. We are fortunate for the opportunity to dedicate a new school in recognition of the positive change Justice Sotomayor represents to our students and District.”

Check out today's lohud article which describes how Yonkers is continuously working hard to financially maintain the much needed repairs in our Yonkers Public Schools such as keeping rain, wind and moisture out of the school buildings so that basic conditions like temperature are maintained for our students.

As Yonkers waits for Albany to help, the city's schools continue to age, crack and leak. So the city must find ways to keep the schools dry and safe.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano plans to ask Albany for $100 million to rebuild the city's schools, but is ready to break ground without aid.

05/30/2019

Mike Spano has increased City funding for Yonkers Public Schools to historic levels and has increased school funding from Albany. Since taking office, the graduation rate of Yonkers students has improved by 14%, the highest of any large city in New York State. Since day 1 in office, Mayor Mike Spano has put the children of Yonkers first.
