๐ School still may be out, but parents, you still have homework. Before you buy your child an e-bike, make sure it's actually a legal e-bike. ๐ฒ
Not every bike marketed as an "e-bike" is a legal e-bike in California. Some are actually electric motorcycles (e-motos) that can reach speeds up to 60 mph and are legally prohibited on public streets, bike lanes, and trails.
Before you buy, you will want to know:
โ๏ธ Is it a legal Class 1, 2, or 3 e-bike?
โ๏ธ How fast does it go?
โ๏ธ Has it been modified or can it be?
โ๏ธ Where is it legal to ride?
โ๏ธ What California and local City laws apply?
โ๏ธ Does it require a license, registration, or insurance?
The wrong purchase can have serious consequences. Violations may result in citations, impoundment, and lasting legal consequences for both the parent and the rider.
