Peter Miele will present "Revolutionaries on the River: The Mifflins, the Wrights, and the Legacy of the American Revolution." York County's hospitality heritage just got a little more permanent, thanks to another round of generous donations from the community. Three recent acquisitions — the Modernaire Motel sign, original Modernaire building plans, and a rich trove of Yorktowne Hotel memorabilia and records — are now part of the History Center's Library & Archives and Collections holdings.

Thanks to the Lincoln Highway Association PA Chapter and generous donors, the History Center now has the beloved Modernaire neon sign on display at the Agricultural & Industrial Museum on Princess Street. Shortly after news coverage of the installation, a local architect contacted us to donate a set of original plans for the motel! And following its heavy involvement in restoring the theYorktowneHotel, the York County Economic Alliance donated several bins of memorabilia they used when doing research on the landmark business.

Now, the stories of both the Modernaire Motel and Yorktowne Hotel are better preserved for future generations.

This year's distinguished recipients: Stephen Smith and Dr. Roger Wilson, both celebrated for their invaluable publications on York County heritage. The event is free and open to the public. Tom Ort, left, senior turbine engineer at Voith Group, recently presented History Center President & CEO Benjamin Neely with a generous $4,000 gift from Voith to support the History Center’s educational programming. Tom is also a History Center member and volunteer.

Voith’s support will fund the development of new STEM-focused artifacts that our Education team will use in its Traveling Trunk program that we take directly into classrooms. The new materials will bring hands-on learning opportunities tied to the history of STEM in York County into schools that may not otherwise be able to visit us.

Tom and Ben are pictured here in front of the History Center’s S. Morgan Smith display. Founded in York in 1877, the S. Morgan Smith Co. became an internationally recognized leader in hydroelectric turbine manufacturing and is today part of Voith Hydro.

The discussion included updates on our new Revolutionary York exhibit, upcoming events and programming, and candid conversation about the challenges and opportunities that come with preserving and maintaining some of York’s oldest historic structures.

Tony Villarreal, owner of A.P. Villarreal Landscaping in Spring Grove, finished up repairs to the fence surrounding the Colonial Courthouse last week. The work, which took two weeks, was paid for by a grant from the York County Community Foundation. Maintaining our historic properties represents a substantial ongoing expense, and we're grateful to funders such as the community foundation that support our work.
