The Roman word "pallium" refers to a person's cape or cloak, often used in relation to a soldier. When the person passed away, they were covered in the cloak. This led to the term "pall" and is a heavy, usually white, and sometimes ornate cloth that is draped over the casket. The terms "casket bearer" and "pall" were merged together to create the term "pallbearer" which refers to a person who carries the casket during a funeral service.

🎈 Why We Do Not Allow Balloons in the Cemetery 🎈

We understand that balloons are often released or left behind as a symbol of love and remembrance. However, when balloons deflate and fall onto bronze memorials, they can cause permanent staining, discoloration, and damage to the surface of the memorials.

The photo below shows an example of the damage that can occur.

Our goal is to preserve the beauty, dignity, and condition of every memorial for all families who visit their loved ones. We kindly ask visitors to help us protect the cemetery by choosing alternative tributes such as fresh flowers, silk arrangements, or other approved decorations.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us maintain a respectful and beautiful resting place for all.

Located in Edinburgh, Scotland, Greyfriars Kirkyard is considered the most haunted cemetery in the world. There is an American Flag that hangs in Greyfriars Church, because the church opened the same day the Pilgrims landed in the United States in 1620. In 1970, this flag from the White House was gifted by the American Consul on its 350th anniversary.
