It's National Dog Day! Today we thank our furry four-legged friends for the unconditional love and joy they bring us all!

IT'S NATIONAL DOG DAY!
This is a day to honor all dogs and the loyalty they give us.

Today we recognize Jeanette, Maybelle, and Ritz. These 3 adoptable pups serve as ambassadors to other pups that come into the shelter. After pups come off of their hold, these 3 work to welcome them to socialization group and show them that their temporary stay at the shelter will include some fun times in playgroup.

It's election day again in York County!

Here are important reminders about today's election from the York County Board of Voter Registration & Elections, including how to find your polling place.

Today is Election Day for the U.S. Senate Special Republican Primary Runoff.

Polls are open from 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Voters should confirm their polling place before heading to the polls.

The County Passport Application Acceptance Office will be closed on Tuesday, September 8 and Wednesday, September 9 for renovations and training. The office will also be closed that Monday, September 7, for the Labor Day holiday. Please plan accordingly. We apologize for any inconvenience as we make these upgrades to serve you better.

York County hosted a successful Government Job Fair earlier this month. In total, 78 jobseekers took part, including seven veterans. Several participants utilized the resources from the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce to submit applications. This is the second time the County hosted the event, which featured representatives from across several of our departments to speak directly with jobseekers and answer questions.

This week, County Council recognized our excellent staff at the York County Office of Emergency Management as part of Emergency Management Awareness Month. The purpose of the celebration is to highlight the role of emergency managers in planning, response, recovery, and mitigation. We're grateful for our experienced team in York County. Their constant training, review of plans and policies, and partnerships in our community helps keep all residents safe.

They demonstrate excellence through professionalism every day.

Important information for York County homeowners! If you have recently purchased a home or changed your legal residence, don’t forget to apply for your Special Assessment as a legal residence.

🏠This assessment may significantly reduce the amount of property taxes you owe on your primary residence.
🏠You should apply before real property tax bills are calculated in early September
🏠Don’t wait—check your eligibility and submit your application today

Plus, certain South Carolina residents can qualify for the Homestead Exemption, if they meet one of the following requirements as of December 31, 2025:

🏠Be 65 years of age or older
🏠Be declared totally and permanently disabled by a state or federal agency having the authority to make such a declaration
🏠Be certified as legally blind by a licensed ophthalmologist

AND you must:

🏠Be a legal resident of South Carolina for one calendar year as of December 31 of the preceding tax year, and
🏠Hold the complete fee simple title or life estate to your primary legal residence

The benefit of the Homestead Exemption is that the first $75,000 of the Fair Market Value of qualifying recipient’s legal residence is exempt from their property taxes! Visit the link in the comments to apply today or get more information.

James Lingerfelt worked at the York County Sheriff's Office Detention Center for 25 years. Last night, County Council recognized James on his retirement and many years of dedicated service. Sheriff Tony Breeden said serving in a detention center is a job most people simply can't do. For James it wasn't just a job. "His passion is people," Sheriff Breeden said. We're grateful for his service to York County, and we wish him the very best in his retirement!
